My current laptop is now ~10 years old and runs Windows 8.1. I'm very happy with it - it's setup the way I like it and pretty much does everything I need*, generally using older versions of software. The battery life is now starting to decrease though and I suppose it won't be long until something breaks and it needs replacing.

I'm also not looking forward to getting a new one with Windows 11 on it. Everything I've heard about it sounds like it's going to just annoy me.

* Except offline email now  :( . I use Outlook 2010 and it stopped working with Hotmail earlier this year thanks to those ********* at Microsoft.

My biggest concern about any upgrade.

Will it auto delete my Stormcast Eternals software.

Still running 8.1.
There's a Windows 11 PC still sitting in its box, waiting for the 8.1 one to die.
I'll do this later

I have the near same situation, Phil.

My win10 desktop (purchased right after win10 was released) is slowly giving up the ghost and I bought a win11 machine during the Thanksgiving sales. It is sitting in a box. Being old, my current desktop has every piece of software I like, arranged to suit my exact taste. Hate to start over again. If I can continue to limp along will likely do the replacement near the time win10 support ends.

I miss Win3.1.1

The original 48k was £175 back in 83. That is about £560 now.

I am severely tempted - they are out of stock EVERYWHERE at the mo, but might pop into Argos tomorrow to reserve/order.  :D

Guardian review

Very retro.....no doubt aimed at those who were young back in the 1980's.

Is it a personal computer or a retro gaming consule though? According to the box its a PC, but the ad lists it as a gaming consule?

If its a PC I'd like to see it run Win 11 on 48k of memory - good luck! :)

Does it come with the original manual, which documented the built-in BASIC programming language?

If yes it's a computer, if no it's a gaming console.

Must admit I struggle to see the point, other than the nostalgia factor.

Bit like when I bought a Stylophone a while ago. Played with it for a bit, but now it sits on a shelf somewhere, unloved & unused.

We've been on Windows 8 at work for years but it finally gave up the ghost and forced us to upgrade to 10 instead.  I hate every new version of Windows, it just never works as it should.

Its because Microsoft no longer does a thorough check that the programs work. It does some basic checks then releases it. It then waits for the bugs to reveal themselves and issues upgrades. far cheaper for them, infuriating for us.

We never used to have so many upgrades on programs.
