QuoteI was reading through some of the original 1977 Traveller materials, 'cos why not?

I was struck by the description of Tech Levels:
  Level 8: 1980-1989
  Level 9: 1990-2000
  Level 10: Interstellar community

So by 2001 we should have reached Alpha Centauri? Does this reflect the optimism of 1977, or the degeneration of our spirit initiated by Dexy's Midnight Runners releasing Geno?

Nah, it is the onset of neoliberal policies and the aliens

What? That, rather than the 148,000 years it would take to get there in any current spacecraft? Oh! That and the fact that only one of the five planets identified so far is likely to be habitable and it orbits the red dwarf of the trinary system? As far as the Alpha Centauri system goes, "The future's dim, the future's orange! :D

Interstellar! We should have jump drive by now, and popping over to AC should be like taking a cruise to Australia.

Anyone else remember the Terran Trade Authority series of books from Stewart Cowley?

This book - the first - told a potted history of the 21st century, and the tale of the wars with Proxima Centauri, and of contact with the inhabitants of Alpha Centauri.

Needless to say we are nowhere near where it hoped we would be in spaceflight & technology.

I seem to remember this from a recent Yelp review.

Well Zefram Cochrane seems to have lived in AC system for a while....he even met up with some humaniods with pointed ears (not elves!).

It all seems a bit illogical to me though  :-X

Elves are tricksey, so they might be elves. Hieronymus Bosch, who likely visited AC (or originated there) visually documents other possibilities. You will note that Zefram Cochrane is an anagram of Hieronymus Bosch in Welsh (at least in Techno's Southern dialect).

For part of his exile until 1814, the King of France stayed at Hartwell House, just outside Aylesbury. In honour of this we have a road called Bourbon Street.

Can't help but feel they missed an opportunity to call it Louis Lane.
