So basically a lie?

A bit like the Navy planning "through-deck cruisers" (Invincible class) in the 60's, when aircraft carrier was a dirty word (or two).

No. Remember that 'Hospital' ships in the 50's were basically 'transports' and not 'Surgical Hospitals' as we would think of them... but available for 'basic care' if needed. It WAS, however, a 'Yacht' for 'showing the Flag'. I have a short clip of home movie on

Did it really have medical facilities that could be quickly activated if  needed?  Such as HMS Argus had.

Just as well they did! Although, they were not 'meant' to carry fast jets, they  ended up being pretty useful... at least ONCE! lol.  :) Just maybe, the Navy actually had learned from 'other nations' 'strategic planning' in the 'Washington Treaty' years, pre-WW2? Or Not..    ;)

Apparently there are plans to spend 190 million on a commemorative Royal Yacht to be named HMS Mountbatten

Or revert to the original "Battenburg", then paint the boat in jolly colourful squares.

I thought the name was suggested as HMY Duke of Edinburgh.

I agree it should be built in the UK; every time I contact my MP I mention building hospital ships using DFID funds - https://ukdefencejournal.org.uk/new-british-hospital-ships-proposed/

Perhaps one might be named Duke of Edinburgh.

The popular poll suggested Dukey McDukeface.

Other people might have drawn lessons from that

Nobody really wants a thread named "2021 Deaths" to be all doom and gloom.

Is that the Lallans version?

Random thought- in the event of Scottish Independence Jim Sillars wants one of the aircraft carriers!!!

Britannia used different fuel to everything else, adding to the logistical complexity, I seem to remember.

What are you remembering?  It got a brief mention during my basic training at DARTMOUTH in dealing with ships' power.  Most ships in the fleet were using gas-turbine engines, HMS BRITANNIA was still on FFF, which in 1954 when it came into service was cutting edge technology, but by the 1980s she was the only ship still using it.  At the time of the Falklands War it was logistically too much hassle to provide fuel in the South Atlantic specifically for just this ship.

One or more hospital ships built and maintained on DFID funds seems a good way of using the money as a stimulus package; as BoJo has just cut DFID funds from 0.7% GDP to 0.5% GDP, on a 'temporary' basis, I should have thought there was financial room to develop such a project.  With outbreaks like EBOLA becoming more frequent and regular disasters around the world, they have global use and they would have been very useful for Covid as additional resources instead of, or additional to, the NIGHTINGALE hospitals.  The Chinese already have three such ships.

Why not ?

Actually tax has got a mention but it is a rather uninspiring topic for a site like Pendraken.
