I'd say it was fortunate. I'd certainly prefer not to go on alone uner the circumstances!

I agree.

Years a go when I was a civil servant and they refused to give me any work I used to ring him up for the fun of it- I remember him telling that my Achaemenid Persians were obsolete !! Oh, and had a very surreal conversation on how Eskimo descended female scouts in the modern US army should count as fanatics in WRG modern rules terms.

( note: I am fully aware I am confirming people's prejudices all I can say that  I understand that my non-job was not typical of the civil service)

I thought the name was suggested as HMY Duke of Edinburgh.

I agree it should be built in the UK; every time I contact my MP I mention building hospital ships using DFID funds - https://ukdefencejournal.org.uk/new-british-hospital-ships-proposed/

Perhaps one might be named Duke of Edinburgh.

HMS Britannia was supposedly to be used as a hospital ship in times of need but she never had the facilities she would need as well as enough cruising range to get anywhere useful.

Misquote by Stalin actually - it was Lenin who originally said "the death of one man is a tragedy. The death of 20 thousand is a statistic" ... Stalin just adopted it as an objective  :o

A good innings for Shirley Williams and she always seemed a very principled politician.

No. Remember that 'Hospital' ships in the 50's were basically 'transports' and not 'Surgical Hospitals' as we would think of them... but available for 'basic care' if needed. It WAS, however, a 'Yacht' for 'showing the Flag'. I have a short clip of home movie on Video, of an occasion when Britannia entered the Tyne, sometime in the 60s... escorted by a frigate! THAT couldn't happen now! lol!

As for that 'THING' that 'sailed' up the Thames for a Jubilee celebration a few years back... now THAT DOES make me shudder! At least Britannia 'looked the part' and could travel the globe when we had facilities for such jaunts.
According to Wiki, she did once participate in embarking civilian refugees from Aden. I HAD thought that she was part of the Falklands Task Force... but must have got that wrong, as such is not mentioned.

When you compare Britannia to what the 'super rich' have now... not a bad 'old tub'! ;)

Britannia used different fuel to everything else, adding to the logistical complexity, I seem to remember.
