Hi all,

I was hoping that my first post on my AWI project would include my first unit of painted Pendraken figures. Unfortunately, due to the vagaries of the Royal Mail I'm still waiting, patiently, for some key paints to arrive. Leon may want to share that story...

While I've been waiting I have made some snake fence, hopefully 50 bases for a total 5.75m will be enough. I 'finished' about a third, which just need varnishing. The rest need flocking.

I'm building both sides based around the battle of Guilford Courthouse plus a few extras to cover Cowpens and some of the other battles of 1780-81 in the south.

Regards,
Paul

Snake fence, in the background British and American officers wonder why their trousers are taking so long to paint...

Looks excellent so far Paul. I like the fence - is that matchsticks ? I'm also doing both sides for GC (for years!). I made the mistake of painting all the Brits first and then having no one to fight. If I was doing it again i would paint alternate units so i could start to fight some small actions before i had finished.

Hi goat major,

Yep those are 'craft matchsticks', a bag of several hundred for equivalent of GBP2, still got about half left. Had to cut them in half so they are the right length.

Definitely mixing the units up so I get to fight some small actions along the way. 23rd Foot and Hessian Jagers under way. Lee's Horse and some Militia to follow.

I have finally got around to starting this project and hope to get it done in a year. It has been on my to do list since I watched, as a lad, a refight of Guilford Courthouse put on by the Christchuch Wargames club to mark the American bicentential. Watching this convinced me that wargaming was going to be my serious hobby.

Yes, I have been seriously wargaming since 1976!!!!

Paul

I too fell in love with  AWI in the mid 70s. The  airfix figures(1:72 and 54mm), the Curt Johnson book and those adverts on the back of American comics - all really inspirational. Plus round about that time was the BBC serialisation of Last of the Mohicans (which I thought was AWI at the time). My first AWI wargaming purchases were two Hinchcliffe grenadiers from Redcar model shop. Then nothing until about 4 years ago when I discovered the Pendraken range and - well as we all know - it is unrivalled and a joy to paint. I just need to paint my last militia units now and then I'm ready to go !

I have also been looking for a suitable range for a long time. I primarily own 6mm armies so it took a lot to decide to step up to 10mm. The figures have proved to be more than I hoped for and are turning out to be a true joy to paint.

Paul,

Two really good sources for this are

Long, Obstinate and Bloody by Babits & Howard. Simply the best book without doubt on GC - with some fantastic up to date research. http://www.amazon.com/Long-Obstinate-Bloody-Guilford-Courthouse/dp/0807832669/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1384938479&sr=1-3  (If you are also interested they did a similarly good book on Cowpens - A Devil Of A Whipping)

Also British Grenadier Scenario Book 3 has a full OOB for GC that is based on the above that you could use for any ruleset (available from Caliver)

oh and the British Grenadier forum is an excellent AWI resource (even if you don't play BG - there are a number of AWI experts who hang around the forum)

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the suggestions.

Slow progress this week. Still waiting for a couple of key paints so I can maker real progress on the figures I have started. &*%^(&%(&%( Royal Mail, 15 paints had to be split across 4 packages. All posted on 11th, first 2 arrived on 20th, not bad to get to New Zealand. Third on 25th but still waiting for the last package...

It did give me time to finish flocking my 50 lots of snake fence.
