Perhaps a look could also be taken at the length of the pikes?  They look to come in at little more than 10 feet long, if that.

Mollinary.

PS.  Maybe some pikemen with open hands, like Clibs LoA range, so we can use the Pike pack you already provide?

Definitely seconded.

Meh. I can live with the present attached pikes, but I'd rather not paint a lot more diminutive lobstermen with crushed faces and Darth Vader helmets.

Oh well, ECW is not the centre of the universe. I suppose Pendraken is listening and they'll come up with something sooner or later. I wonder if sales of ECW and TYW figurines are picking up now that Warlord have issued their Pike & Shotte rule?

The open hands has been mentioned as well, so I think this may be something we can look at in our next 'Odds and Ends' month!

Didn't I read somewhere that they used to cut them down to make them more manageable? Having seen the problems some of the reinactors have with handling long pikes I can well believe it.  :o
When you realise we're all mad, life makes a lot more sense.

Hertsblue,

We have had this debate on here before. General Monck referred to the practice of cutting them down, and deplored it.  But, that said, they were supposed to be 16-18 feet long, and it takes a lot of cutting to get down to 10-11 feet. A scale 14ft I could just about live with, but look at the engravings of pikeblocks of the period, then look at the current pikes in the range, and tell me they give the same impression.  The beauty of the open hand is it leaves that decision up to the individual customer.  You can have them cut down to toothpicks if that is your preference, and I can keep them at 16ft if that is mine. Everybody wins. And Leon gets to sell extra packs of separate pikes.

Athenian sarissai were about 5 meters long, the Macedonian variety even 6 meters. Spanish pikes in the 16th and 17th centuries were 4,5 meters long, they were issued by the furriel (quartermaster) on behalf (and at the expense) of the captain of the tercio and anyone insolent enough to saw off a yard or two would have been flogged.

Anyhoo - the original poster rightfully asked to address the obvious flaws in the lobstermen and generals' figures, in other words two essential figures in the ECW range. Personally I couldn't care less whether the pikemen carry their weapons open handed, close handed or up their *****s.

Alright, I do care..  :-\ :P

But let's do first things first, please.

Cheers,
Aar
