Unfortunately, you're lumping all "music lovers" into a homogeneous lot. I consider myself to be a music lover, and yet find his work to be awful. Then again, I'm not keen on much of the orchestral or operatic works post Beethoven though apparently "WAP" is deemed to be good music to some people.

I'll take my usual stand and say "you like it - go for it. Me? No thanks."

Not aware of having heard of Harrison Bertwhistle or his music before. If that's a typical sample I consider myself blessed.

That said, I still mourn the man's passing and wish any fans much pleasure from his work.

I'm sorry there are concepts there that you find hard to grasp.

Thank goodnes for that!  I confess to never having heard of Harrison Birtwhistle and I'm sorry that he's died.  In an attempt to inform myself I noticed a review which of The Minotaur which said " I doubt that this score will appeal to many who are not committed enthusiasts for late 20th century works".  They got that right.  Some of the gushing obituaries reminded me of the tale of The Emperor's New Clothes.

I feel the same way about Megan Thee Stallion but then  I expect her oeuvre is not really aimed at the likes of me

A friends now often replies to emails of mine, bemoaning some advert or other, with YANTIA! or YANTTA!

Not, as I initially thought, some obscure piece of Kernow dialect.

Always a timely reminder.

"The question of accessibility," Birtwistle once said, "is not my problem."

Short on conventional harmony and heavy on complex rhythms, Birtwistle's music was often described as having an abrasive quality. In 1995, his piece "Panic" had a high-profile premiere on live television as part of the hugely popular "Last Night of the Proms" concert.

The BBC was inundated with complaints. "Was somebody strangling a cat?" one viewer asked.

Had to look it up and found that it's a she and rapper.  Rap is something else I don't get.

Indeed so, but there is such a thing as collateral damage, or IDRFAA (incidental damage resulting from another activity) ;)
