I remember seeing an article in either Battlegames or Mini Wargames about the historic 'Plans-Reliefs' held in Lille.   Essentially, huge detailed 3D models
of a city that would allow visualisation and help plan a potential siege.

Totally forgot about it until I came across again today.   A simple google image search throws up many examples with some superb large scale modelling.

How I would love to have a game on one of these !

Just search for 'Plans-Reliefs'.   Well worth a gander.

My understanding is that the Lille museum only holds 15 examples from a collection of over 100 held and displayed in a wing of the Army Museum in Paris (Musée des Plans-Reliefs, Les Invalides)

Les Invalides does have a great collection of the reliefs; upstairs if I remember correctly.  I bought a book showing the collection (although at the moment I can't seem to locate in my bookshelves...)

It might be available for purchase by contacting the museum(?)

Am I the only one thinking "I wonder what scale those are".

Yes, brilliant stuff but tucked away in the alcoves of the loft so you expect to knock into some bats at any moment.

The Musee des Plans-Reliefs is a must-see if you're ever in Les Invalides (it's in the attic-space).  The 200-odd models were built for Louis XIV and the Louvre Galleries were actually to house them!  A few have been lost over the years and some are on display elsewhere (such as the aforementioned Lille), but most are in the attic of Les Invalides.
