Big Christmas Battle - Dwarves vs Skaven

This game was on the 29th Dec, but just getting round to some photos and words

We wanted a fantasy game, as we have been playing lots of Sci Fi and wanted to get some of our Fantasy 10mm troops on the table. The two armies selected were Dwarves (largely Kallistra figures) and Skaven (GW Warmaster figures) - neither army was mine. The scenario was the Dwarves were holding two towers and the Skaven were attacking them to capture the bells. The Skaven had a 50% points advantage - it turned out that the skaven player could only just field the 7500 pts needed despite having huge numbers of figures, and the Dwarf player who we though might be short of figures could easily make the 5000pts needed - I think this is in part due to the relative costs of 1 unit.

The left flank (commanded by my ally)

Note the dwarven gun battery on the hill and the line of crossbows and warriors behind the hedge. On the far side the mass of skaven infantry choose the long route round - while Dwarven Ranger's wait in the woods

The right flank (my dwarves)

On this flank the tower had already been lost in a pre-game Skaven sneak attack. But slightly surprisingly at the start of the game the 3 dwarven defenders easily pummelled the 6 skaven attackers, regaining the tower. Here my troops are advancing to re-take the tower, and holding the hill in-front of the left had tower. Quite a few Skaven are advancing...

Mid Game

The skaven hordes push forwards across the line. On the hill in the middle the first wave of Skaven Plague Monks has been destroyed - but they have severely damaged the Dwarven defenders. On the far side the mass is struggling to dislodge the Rangers from the woods.

The second wave arrives

The second wave of skaven attack the hill near the left hand tower - the Doom Wheel had already killed several Dwarven units infront of the tower.

The right hand tower - re-taken by hordes of skaven

The Dwarven Cavalry and Gyrocopters proved fairly ineffectually against Rat Ogres and Doom Wheels, allowing the mass of rats to swarm over the tower.

What I don't have a photo to show is that on the left flank the Dwarven cannon and infantry line were still sat in their starting positions, resolutely defending an open field!

It was a Skaven win, in an asymmetric scenario - it was much tougher for them than I expected, even with weight of numbers. They were unable to make their numbers count, other than through wave attacks. Shooting from both sides was very ineffectually during the game - I think the Dwarven cannons made the Skaven choose another route for their attack. With so many cheap troops they probably could have braved the cannon fire. On my flank I think I over committed to holding the right hand tower, which stretched me too thin, allowing multiple waves of Skaven to overpower the tough Dwarves.

That looks rather spiffy, Forbes.

Beestmen

Making good use of the last couple of days of the Christmas break to crack on with some painting - more nice simple paint schemes

3 units of bowmen FBE3, and 2 of spears FBE2

Had a quick count up of the other figures I have for this force:
2 units of spearmen
4 units of swordsmen
4+ units of headusmen ( I thought I would get 9 of these on a base but only have got 6 on the ones I did the other day, so have more units of these than expected)
2 giants (part painted, lurking in the background of the above photo)

How many photos are people seeing in the first battle report post on this page? There should be 5, but I'm only seeing the last one on some devices.

Good - not sure what was up. re-uploaded the photos and they seemed to work.

But it must have created a new photo, as the link is different, as the initial report hasn't magically shown its photos.
