Hope it isn't flying to Ireland. It would make St.Patrick's work irrelevant.

Really? Is it specifically the roasted ones that you dislike? One of the very few decent meals I had in my time in China was a hotplate stew of chicken with water chestnuts (which have nothing to do with conkers) and real chestnuts in a rich sauce. And there's a French sausage with pork and chestnuts that sounds quite delicious.
It is, by the way, quite hard to persuade SE Asians that people from other parts of the world can also buy roast chestnuts off braziers beside the road. Lee was amazed to see 'em in Italy.

Yes, it's the roast ones. I love water chestnuts and chestnut stuffing, but roast chestnuts leave me with a peculiar aftertaste that makes me feel quite queasy. I also get it with some varieties of apples, e.g. Pink Lady fine but Royal Gala a definite no no.

The American habit of starting a statement to introduce a new topic with "So", when there's no blasted result element at all.

For me.....Even worse, is listening to a phone in, and hearing someone using "You know" every few seconds.
I'm afraid I stop listening to what they're saying, and just count the number of times they use that particular verbal tic.

Some are absolutely astounding.

There seem to be more "You knows" than coherent speech. !

Let's pause and remind ourselves of the atrocities regularly committed against English by non-American speakers too.
