Stepping carefully back to gaming....

Played a game of our home brewed rules last night, using a scenario from MW, the sides were Demons vs Imperial

My cannons, which due to needing to enter the table, ended up deploy far too far away to do much

It was a good game, even if I lost fairly heavily.
Not totally sure if the scenario worked, basically the two forces are mis-aligned with their centres facing the opposition right flanks. This has the potential to be a turning battle, but kind of end up with two rather separate battles, and ultimately the bulk of the demons stuck on my right flank - in part due to their very slow movement

Top tip. Before you spend 20 mins carefully measuring and cutting magnetic sheet in to 40mm squares. Make sure it is magnetic sheet not steel sheet!  >:(  >:(
At least I noticed before I stuck them all onto the bases of figures.

Then I had to spend another 20 mins cutting them to different sizes to finish off lining a storage box.

Now I can start again with the magnetic sheet.

actually managed to cut the right stuff up, and get it stuck on the bottom of lots of figures

And then found most of my lizardmen needed magna-basing too - which was another sheet cut up and stuck on. But no photos as I had to sort out roast tea.

Dungeon Saga

On a completely different tack, a very large box arrived yesterday lunchtime

This was somewhat of a surprise, as I hadn't realised that all the Dungeon Saga stuff had reached Mantic, I was thinking I had a few more weeks to wait.

As can be seen its a very big box, that was mostly full of stuff. I went for the base game, and all 3 expansions.

There are a load of figures, including the dragon, in coloured plastic, that is slightly bendy, and straightness in hot water. Loads of dungeon tiles in heavy duty card, filling most of the back left box. Loads of info cards, the top layer in the back left box. the back right box has furniture and more tiles in it.

Had time for a quick play through of the intro scenario with the kids yesterday afternoon - seems to play OK. There is a huge amount of stuff to assimilate though. The intro guide does a good job for the first couple of scenarios at introducing stuff 1 step at a time. But then for scenario 3 its plunge in at the deep end.  We did find the different heroes play very differently the two warriors are very tough, and take down skeletons without too much effort, and suffer very few wounds. The caster and the elven shooter, need to keep their distance, if they let the enemy get close then they rapidly suffer wounds.

The bone pile mechanism for raising up undead works very well, making it hard for the players to deal with all the undead, as more keep arriving.

It was a particularly good roast, even if I say so myself.   :>

We do seem to be lacking the fat belly icon though...

I got a big Mantic box just like that one too. My youngest daughter enjoyed playing the 1st sceario, it feels like a good quick moving game. Not sure when I will get round topainting all the minis.

Me too. I'm wondering if army painter dipping will work well on the different coloured plastics? I think I will paint the heroes first, as the dark blue makes them quite hard to tell apart.

More sticking on of magnetic bases this evening.

Finished off the lizardmen. And remember to take some snaps in their new double layered storage box - which is looking rather full already, and I have a fair few more still to paint...

Also stuck magnetic sheet on a bunch of round based figures, which is much more fiddly.

Now need to buy more metal sheet, and magnetic sheet.

I was really tempted by the dungeon saga tuff, but decided not to get it in the end.

I have 5 dungeon crawlers lying around already, and just ordered the d&d lost mine of phandelver today, so have enough to keep me going!

Hmmmm.....I rather doubt a dip will work on plastic/polythene minis, without some sort of 'key'.......maybe a decent spray on matt varnish ?
(That's if I've understood what you're planning for some of them.  :-\)

I have straigth up washed the bendy plastic of my castle ravenloft minis and they come out ok, just be sure to varnish them well, and don't rub them too much before the varnish stage!

Techno

Must admit, I'd have thought the 'polytheney' figures would have been too 'shiny', and any sort of wash would simply have slid off the model.
But that's good to know, Peter ! :)
Thanks - Phil

Phil - The figures are harder than the polythene style - they are pretty rigid - but do repose well in hot water. So I'm not sure what material they are.

Peter - I will give a wash / army painter thing a go - there is a lot of detail in the figures, and it would be good to be able to see it better, the monochrome and shininess of the figures makes it quite hard to see as is.

Its also good to know about the D&D games - if DS goes down well might look at some of those next year. But considering the amount of stuff in DS, it might take a long time to play through all the scenarios.
