This has probably been asked all ready but can anyone out there in Pendraken Land recommend a good easy play rule set for the Napoleonic period.
Also any hints and tips on how to base my forces, eg unit size/base size etc.

Thanks in advance
Ian

For simple rules, I've heard  good things about this one:

Or go with black powder if that's familiar?

Or if you own impetus, there is a free napoleonic variant/add-on on their site

What sort of level are you looking at?

For skirmish, I'd suggest Flintloque ;) File the pointy ears off and you're good!

For about divisional to corps I'd go Shako. Fast, reasonable chrome, few bits I don't like but nothing that's massively jarring in play and the overall result works really well.

For corps to army, I'd suggest Blucher - we've played a few games and on table its great. The campaign system to genrate the games is a bit chalk and cheese though - I think I like it, but it can generate some odd games (much like reality).

I had some games with DSLB, and liked it !

Blucher - check out the Honour Website by Sam Mustafa.
I don't think my wife likes me very much, when I had a heart attack she wrote for an ambulance.

I'm not really into Nappy gaming, but I do like Too Fat Lardie's 'Sharp Practice' for Skirmish scale - individual fingures, although some kind of 'sabot' base is useful for moving formations. You can play it with 10mm minis, they're damned small, but the Napoleonic uniforms are nice and colourful, so it's easy to see who's who! I usually only play with very small units, about a half dozen of about a dozen minis each per side, plus a few Big Men (commanders). A very entertaining set of rules to read too, if you're into the Lardy sense of humour.

A new version of Sharp Practice is being worked on now.

Thamks for all the replies.
I am looking to be doing a reasonable size battle as I have unearthed a lot (300+) of 10mm Old Glory French Napoleonics which had been lurking in my garage for ages. :-[
The idea I have is to get the French army painted and based first then exchange some £'s with Leon to get an equal sized British/Prussian force.
I think this is due to my introduction to wargaming way back in 1973 playing Napoleonic games at school using hordes of plastic Airfix  :)

I've gone 48 infantry figures per base in 6mm for Blucher - that's using 6mm though. Approx 12-16 bases for an army. Looking at the foot print I might think 32 figures per base for 10mm, maybe less.

Each base is a Brigade or thereabouts.

For Shako you want three bases per battalion, and they're about 30mm wide; I'd guess a double rank would give 24 figures per unit? We've actually gone to six bases as it makes forming squares easier and looks better - so two ranks of 30mm by 10mm with four figures each would look pretty good... and can sabot up to fit Blucher bases ok if you want use them for both.

Dunno if that helps plan :D

Hullo,
For one unit = battalion scale games I prefer March Attack by Crusader Games. http://www.crusaderpublishing.com/MarchAttack.php
Same scale and basing as Shako. I use three 15 mm figs on 30 mm wide bases, and four bases per battalion in double rank. If I were to start fresh I would base 5 pendraken figs in single rank per base, 20 figs per battalion. Easier still, two 30x30 mm bases, with 10 figs per base.
You could play Blucher with those as well, one of your battalions would be a brigade.
Cheers,
Aksu

I would suggest exchanging those £ a bit earlier and painting a couple of units of each side so you can start playing sooner.

I find building both forces in parallel helps maintain the enthusiasm for the project ;)

How about Age of Eagles?  Many use this in the US. Not in Britain?

Chad

Age of Eagles is used in Britain. It is a brigade based game but very different to Blucher. Age of Eagles II is due soon

For quick and easy, I think Black Powder is the simplest.

I think Lasalle isn't far behind.

But the biggest question is at what scale do you want to play?

Black Powder is able to accomodate just about any scale, whereas lasalle a "unit" is a Battalion (4 bases for french, 6 for austrians, for example).

Blucher is another good and fairly simple one, but the scale is one base is a brigade.

The rules from the boardgame "Command and Colors: Napoleonics" work pretty well.  I'm working on getting some figures painted and based for them.  You can Google it and come up with plenty of folks already doing it.
