Warmaster/Warband Advice

Hi Everyone

I am a Warmaster player. I have a large Undead army (3000pts), a growing Empire army (2000pts) and am about to start a High Elf army(1-2000pts).

My figures are largely Games Workshop originals although I am padding out my armies with other manufacturers.

I am also about to be a Warband (Pendraken) player and I have a starter Undead pack and a starter Barbarian pack.

I hope to get sabots so I can use my Warmaster armies with the Warband rules and conversely my Warband armies with Warmaster. Warband bases are nominally 100 x 50 mm so sabots are an easy way to use Warmaster figures without rebasing.

I expect that some figures sizes will make that a bit awkward. For example the Warband Barbarian army has Bison Riders. They are big figures. You cannot get more than two of them onto a Warmaster 40 x 20 mm base. Therefore a Warband sabot base will only have 6(8) figures on it.

I can get all 12 bison riders onto a Warband 100 x 50 mm base if I don't use sabots.

The question is what Warmaster army would have a unit like Bison Riders in it so it is in my interest to base them Warmaster style or will I just base them Warband style.

I expect that some of my figures will only be used for Warband such as Command or Magic Users as these are quite differently portrayed in the two rulesets.

Apologies for the length of this post.

Firstly hello and welcome
Warband bases are fine with Sabots, not played warmaster, but many on the forum have and will help. 8)

Jim,

Presumably you've got the Warmaster Trial Armies Compendium 2009 pdf?

In there the only thing close to a Bison unit, I think, is the Ogres Kingdoms Rhinox Riders unit.

Welcome

Warmaster 40x20 bases work great with sabots for Warband. You can either use 3 or 4 WM bases, I tend to use 4 for cavalry, and either 3 or 4 for infantry.

As to which WM army Pendraken Barbarians might work for - I'm not immediately sure. Kislev perhaps? But I don't think there is a direct match. So it may be better to go with basing these guys just for Warband? One of the things I like about bigger bases is that it opens up a lot more options for arranging the figures, rather than the rather tiny 40x20 WM bases.

Leon has cut me some sabot bases with 1p and 2p sized holes to allow my WM command figures to be used for Warband.

Here a few examples of WM based figures being used for Warband

3WM base unit on the far left, several 4 stand bases, with cavalry facing forwards, and infantry across, and a command stand with 2ps towards the top

I'll see how I get on with a pseudo-Orc army and will also check out the Trial Armies PDF.

I'll keep Kislev in mind too.

I like the idea of Barbarians as Orcs  8)

But a key part of the WM Orc army is the goblins, the wolf riders giving you light cavalry, and the goblin infantry - which are a compulsory unit. Not immediately sure which figures would work for these - perhaps some of the historical Pendraken figures as they are smaller than the fantasy ones?

Hi Leon

Hope to get down to Gateshead this weekend.

I'll maybe succumb to the High Elves and some sabot bases.

No worries, let me know if you need any of the sabot bases as we don't carry much stock of those at the shows.
