Clearly he went on to a very full career after the war.

Cameronian informs me that Mike Embree sadly died before Christmas.   He was a true gentleman, and wrote three splendid books on aspects of the wars of  the mid nineteenth century.  I was lucky enough to do a recce of the Western Battlefields of 1866 with him, Bruce Weigle, and a few other nutters, back in the late noughties. A splendid trip, with lots of good memories. Sad days.

That is very sad news but, given his diagnosis, a blessed relief based upon personal experience :(. A true gentleman indeed and I was lucky enough to have a good chat with him at Colours and then give him a lift home one year. He introduced me to Bruce and his books at the show and my interest in mid-19thC European warfare began there :). I have his books and will treasure them even more.

Condolences Phil. There's a story I heard once of how a young boy came to understand his dog's passing.

He asked the vet, "People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life — like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?"

The vet nodded.

He continued, "Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay for as long as we do."

Not sure if it really happened, but it's a nice sentiment none the less.

Animals will relentlessly persecute an albino, to the point of killing it. As for a dog that smells different....They're actually pretty close to us.

Thanks for the wishes, guys. :)

As far as colour is concerned....I think dogs have quite a limited 'colour vision'...so they'll see things quite differently to ourselves....Don't think they can see things at the red end of the visible spectrum.  :-\......dichromatic ??

Of course, I'm not suggesting all dogs and animals are angels. We all know that sometimes dogs can take a dislike to other dogs and that animals can be savage to one another throughout the animal kingdom (just like many of us humans). But when I walk my daughter's dog and she meets another dog, they're usually quite eager to walk up to each other, tails wagging, and get acquainted regardless of the breed, colour or markings of the other dog. And, as you suggest, when you meet the odd cranky one, it's usually for another reason.

I always find it striking that when we get a new cat, the resident ones are all hissing and hatred for about four days, then we find them all asleep in each others' arms. It's a sort of feline When Harry met Sally... plot.

No such luck with out 2 resident moggies - mother & daughter - but daughter was re-homed when she was a kitten (along with her 4 brothers - to separate homes) but daughter was brought back to us by her new owner who had forgotten to get her landlords permission to have a cat.
But over the 4 month separation period, mother had completely forgotten her daughter and vice-versa now 5 years on they still walk around each other at a standard metre separation distance spitting and eyeing each other up with disgust - any closer and we have a massive noisy and very vicious cat fight to contend with.

All very strange. They wont sleep anywhere the other one has slept. Wont eat out of the others bowl and if we stroke one of them the other one is likely to attack us or leap on the other in a fit of peak!
With hindsight, I wish we'd never taken the daughter back in (& I am not a fan of 'my wife's cats' at the best of times anyway!)

It's "Boom Boom" (Old John Lee Hooker number).
Really nice contrast of control in the verse to and fro with ripping it loose for the solo.

We lost a fine man today, our moral leader during the tough days of spring.

Typically modest as were so many of his generation:
"I'm still Captain Tom, that's who I really am but if people choose to call me colonel, well, thank you very much".

I like to think he'll be united with the rest of the Burma Lads (My Grandfather included) somewhere they can share a cuppa, or maybe something stronger.
Maybe Dame Vera will drop by to lead a sing along.

A bit of a diversion from departures.
One of my pet theories about the British Invasion's success hinges around the technical improvements they enjoyed over the original artists.

There's a lot more twang or edge to be had from an AC-30 or Fender Bass, and whatever Gibson, Fender and Rickenbacker they selected.
Compare with whatever John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, T-Bone Walker and Elmore James were playing through.
(Usually an archtop with retrofitted pickups and a repurposed bit off a PA).

Some people suggest that as  you now had  White people playing Black peoples music the genre became much more acceptable.

It certainly received a far wider audience, both in terms of airplay and finding the songs in mainstream record shops.
Some of us followed that train back to the original artists.

Of course, white people playing back people's music goes back a bit further.
The New Orleans Rhythym Kings are an example of people doing it well.
Elvis Presley managed to rehash old blues classics into a rockabilly style, while maintaining their spirit.
Pat Boone's covers of Little Richard hits were musically dismal but commercially successful.
The British Invasion bands seemed to be a bunch of guys playing the music they loved (rather well in many cases), and filling the domestic gap left after Cliff's Move it.

The process isn't done:
More recent examples would include the 2-tone explosion, blue-eyed soul like Wham and Wet Wet Wet.
There's also been that crossover into hip-hop, with Vanilla Ice playing Boone to Eminem's Elvis.

I'm not sure hijacking an obits page for a music chat is altogether appropriate.
Let's close by acknowledging a recent cover version chain: Sinatra, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Captain Tom - You'll never walk alone.

Christopher Plummer. The Battle Of Britain and Waterloo. Two films that for all the inaccuracies, can never be bettered. Excellent roles in both... though, I will admit that my eyes were drawn to other things in some BoB scenes!  ;)
Also 'quite good' in The Sound Of Music'...which CAN grow on you, despite having been dragged to see it several times as a small child. We had a white cat called Edelweiss after the song. Still can't stand the singing kids, tho...  :o

Four of Plummer's best.

Fall of the Roman Empire:
  Gladiator without all the gladiating:
All-star cast (Loren, Guinness, Mason, Shariof) with Plummer playing Commodus (The bad guy out of Gladiator).
  Kills lots of Germans

Sound of Music:
U-boat captain marries a nun and becomes a rockstar.
Musical high point "Eidelweiss": a song rally the crowd and the bad guys realise they're beaten (Shameless copy form La Marseillaise in Casablanca, later homaged in the Blues Brothers).
Doesn't kill any Germans, but makes them look rather foolish.
  Also this
  (https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/totalwar-ar/images/6/65/Von_Trapp_Nazi_flag.png/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/340?cb=20170726195344)

Battle of Britain:
Zoom, dakka dakka dakka, and plenty of tomato sauce for jerry.
Spectacular visuals, some poignant personal stories, all-star cast.
  Kills lots of Germans.

Waterloo:

Doug Mountjoy, snooker player.

Victor Ambrus, a superb illustrator, probably best known as the chap on Time Team who sketched the site they were digging. Absolutely loved his work and always wanted to be able to draw like him, but failed miserably.

Off at a tangent I know, but ...

Here in the U.K. television channel More 4 has a new show (first episode aired yesterday). It's called The Great British Dig: History in Your Back Garden and is presented by Hugh Dennis. It is very much like Time Team. The first episode was digging near a Roman fort in Newcastle and the next episode (next Sunday) is searching for a Viking burial ground in North Yorkshire.

I enjoyed it and will watch the rest of the series.

Aye, very enthusiastic.

Not always the most observant though.

Distinctly remember him commentating on a car that was slowing down, saying something like "He's stopping! Maybe it's an electrical fault?". And we were sat on the sofa saying "Count the wheels, Murray!" (i.e. one was missing . . .).

Not the only sports commentator that has that problem mind.

Real shock about Sabine, since the radio news didn't mention an illness, I imagined a terrible prang.

I know her form Top Gear, where she brought a degree of sanity and charm to the gang show.
Clarkson, Hammond and May knew that any laddish cheek would be repaid in full when track time came around.

She was mentioned as a potential host when the original three quit.
With 2 suitable sidekicks that might have worked.

As ever, I feel mix of sadness at the loss, delight to have been entertained by her, and sympathy for her friends and family.

Leeds United was one of my Subbuteo table-top soccer teams. I remember replacing a normal outfield player with a slightly crouching goalkeeper figure (this pose made the figure look slightly shorter than a normal outfield player) which I then painted with an all white strip and red hair (Billy Bremner!). Some of the other outfield players also got a long hair paint job! But I can't recall if I was able to get hold of another crouching goalkeeping figure for Johnny Giles (I have a feeling I eventually did)! :D

Yeah, SO true. :( And there the appalling 'Command Decision'... BUT, Vets aren't  always 'riight.'

(I may have already recounted this, but...)

Before MY time, a Terrrier got hit by car. Lost use of back legs.  Vet said "Put Down". Grandma vetoed..." Look at his eyes".
Couple of months, no change. Then uncle brought in  a 'big pup' Boxer dog!
'Invalid' Shat itself.. and started to try to get up!  ;D
Result... they ran around together for a few more years!  :)

My time... cat 'at Death's Door'. Vet tried to insert Thermometer.... couldn't catch the cat!   ;D
Another three years... until another 'Command Decision'... 'collapsed lung'.  No Chance, so decision made... But, HE DIDN'T WANT TO GO. I will ALWAYS wonder if I made the 'wrong call'... BUT, such is life.  :(

The NICE thing was......Von went to see her two days ago.......And Shelagh DID recognise her.

Both sad....But 'sort of' glad it's all over for her......The daft old sod.

Phil. :(

I think that, no matter how much "they had a good innings"/ "this was expected/ "they've gone to a better place" or whatever, it's still a shock when the end comes. My grandfather met him on a couple of occasions during his time in the Army and held him in quite some regard.  One story he told was about some official event with two long-term 'rival' regiments present who had arranged themselves on opposite sides of the room with a large swathe of 'no man's land' across the centre.  When Prince Philip arrived and was briefed on the situation he got the officers from both sides in the middle, spoke to them for 2 minutes and the two sides came together for the rest of the event.

He was the Colonel of the Int Corps. He still held that title at death.
He had a standing brief that he would make someone laugh before he left each room he entered on official business. If no one laughed he got ruder and ruder until he put his foot in it.
They said he was as sharp as a tack until the end, and had a wicked sense of humour. Interesting to hear today that he tried to reconcile with Diana before her death.

BBC have 4 channels on Freeview - 1, 2, 231 & 232. All four were broadcasting exactly the same thing from ~midday to at least 22:00 on Friday, which seemed excessive.

The BBC does seem to have fixated on all content must be Prince Philip related. I understand the need to show programming about him and his life. But they have multiple channels, they don't need to show the same content on all of them at the same time.

I think on Friday they had BBC 3 and BBC 4 TV showing nothing and directing viewers to BBC1.

Yesterday the BBC sport app had a whole section of around 6 stories about Prince Philip - none of which where sport related. I really don't think the BBC have reflected the mood of the nation on this.

There was an old satirical line, that when something bad happens, a Royal has to make the ultimate sacrifice.
It may have started as early as David Frost.

The Duke of Edinburgh's departure wasn't altogether unexpected after recent illness and aged 99.
I also don't subscribe to the sort of Conspiracy theories that all satirical matter is based on fact.

But then I switched on the television on Friday and worked my way up the channels.
1, 2, 3, 4, 5 (All Duke of Edinburgh retrospectives), 6 some unwatchable repeat, 7, 8, 9 (More HRH) with most BBC channels showing the same feed.

I did start wondering whether something really terrible had happened in Belfast.

I have enjoyed the radio coverage on Channel 5.
Doing small bits of current affairs in between news and sport, I learned a lot more about Prince Philip's life.
Loads of snippets about his early life, family, education, Navy days, and his role in establishing the DoE awards, and waok in the early days of teh conservation movement.
You know, the sort of stuff that a properly functioning media would have informed us about anyway.

Also some interesting sporting stuff.
Not just the sort of made-up sports you can only really do if you happen to own a small kingdom, but patronage of grass roots sports in his royal role.

Folks from outside the UK are often both fascinated and confused by the role of our Royalty.
Times like this, I realise that we also know very little.
A good example would be Philip's titles and honours: He has a lot - check it on Wikipedia.
Some: like his Doctorate in Science form the University of Delhi - Clearly where he about Indian fusebox installation, are not heritable, and he will take them with him.
Others: Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth, Baron Greenwich, require an inheritor. I guessed Charles might get these, but apparently Edinburgh's getting Edward.

There's an awful lot of thins stuff we don't know.
And 75% of the serious television showing us the same potted obit really does nothing to enlighten us at all.

The weather forecasts did keep going - here in the UK even a nuclear attack couldn't stop them - but with the weatherpersons suitably and respectfully attired with the men in dark suits and black ties.  This article is quite informative. It's ancient history, dating from 2001 before even the death of the Queen Mother; but it shows how little has actually changed in the intervening two decades:

No. Remember that 'Hospital' ships in the 50's were basically 'transports' and not 'Surgical Hospitals' as we would think of them... but available for 'basic care' if needed. It WAS, however, a 'Yacht' for 'showing the Flag'. I have a short clip of home movie on Video, of an occasion when Britannia entered the Tyne, sometime in the 60s... escorted by a frigate! THAT couldn't happen now! lol!

As for that 'THING' that 'sailed' up the Thames for a Jubilee celebration a few years back... now THAT DOES make me shudder! At least Britannia 'looked the part' and could travel the globe when we had facilities for such jaunts.
According to Wiki, she did once participate in embarking civilian refugees from Aden. I HAD thought that she was part of the Falklands Task Force... but must have got that wrong, as such is not mentioned.

When you compare Britannia to what the 'super rich' have now... not a bad 'old tub'! ;)

Perhaps one might be named Duke of Edinburgh.

Britannia used different fuel to everything else, adding to the logistical complexity, I seem to remember.

What are you remembering?  It got a brief mention during my basic training at DARTMOUTH in dealing with ships' power.  Most ships in the fleet were using gas-turbine engines, HMS BRITANNIA was still on FFF, which in 1954 when it came into service was cutting edge technology, but by the 1980s she was the only ship still using it.  At the time of the Falklands War it was logistically too much hassle to provide fuel in the South Atlantic specifically for just this ship.

One or more hospital ships built and maintained on DFID funds seems a good way of using the money as a stimulus package; as BoJo has just cut DFID funds from 0.7% GDP to 0.5% GDP, on a 'temporary' basis, I should have thought there was financial room to develop such a project.  With outbreaks like EBOLA becoming more frequent and regular disasters around the world, they have global use and they would have been very useful for Covid as additional resources instead of, or additional to, the NIGHTINGALE hospitals.  The Chinese already have three such ships.

If we need a hospital ship for our armed forces we need to supply them a state of the art one that can keep up with the fleet and has no issues with different fuel etc
It should be equipped permanently as a hospital  with the best equipment money can buy. They deserve no less.  It will then be able to deal with casualties from world emergencies etc. The water desalination plants should also be in excess of what the ship needs to allow for supplying those in need with water.

This makes a dual use ship not viable, that's not a problem as far as I can see . If the Royal Family want a yacht then they can pay for it themselves they can certainly afford it. I see no good reason why the country should pay for it.

I rather doubt that any of the Royals 'Want' a 'yacht' now. ('New arrivals', apart?). That does not mean that such should not be considered, if just as a concept. Sadly, however, the need to 'show the Flag' in a relatively un-armed ship, has passed.

A dedicated hospital ship would be nice... But, We NEED Warships.

Now, we have  one and a half A/C carriers, (work in progress!)... and probably cannot afford the aircraft except on hire... so, stick some 'State Rooms' into the unused hangar  space of the second one... and we can have a Bloody BIG Royal Yacht !  8)   (Competition could become Interesing!).

As aircraft , eventually, become available... 'downsize'...  could probably get a 'cheap bundle deal package' on S/H LCS...  'might' do for the Thames, anyway!  ;)

The Americans recently sent one of their hospital ships up the Hudson when Covid was at its worst in New York City.

I've seen proposals; practical and fanciful to use large warships in civilian crisis situations.
Even a modest one has a big powerplant, a trained crew, communications, water desalination and some medical facilities.
The bigger ones, or a dedicated hospital ship have the potential to tie up and service several city blocks for water and power.

There can be few better ways to "show the flag" than responding quickly to a civil disaster, and render assistance in times of need.

For example: Kefalonia earthquake 1953.

Indeed, Mike, more frigates needed. The UK has a good track record of sending ships around the world to disaster zones to provide aid. But do we need a dedicated hospital ship? It's a lot faster to send these new fangled aeroplane thingies instead to supply aid and/or evacuate casualties than sail a ship to some far off destination. The last one(?) was a converted cruise ship, the SS Uganda, with the school kids turfed out and a 3 day re-fit implemented in Gibraltar to turn it into a hospital ship for service in the Falklands. With our shrinking armed forces, are we expecting to fight another big campaign on the other side of the world? I like to think there's plans to call up some civil ship and quickly convert it a la Uganda should the Falklands or it's like, occurs again. As for the Royals wanting a yacht well, yes, wouldn't you? But they're not daft. They know the public wouldn't wear it and Charlie plans to downsize the monarchy anyway if/when he's monarch.

I met Richard once, can't remember where now, presumably Lenton.

We were both standing looking idly around and introduced ourselves.

I said,"Oh, you were behind Dark Futures" and he replied in the affirmative.

I said I preferred Car Wars but that the figures were proving useful for Laserburn games.

He thought for a few moments, said something profound .... like,"Hmmm," spotted someone he knew and wandered off.

About par for the course for my interactions with the great and the good, I'd say.

Despite that fleeting interaction, I'm sorry to hear he's gone.

You are quite correct! When I look at the article date... 2013! But, I looked for 'an article' having seen it come up on a 'Current News' feed, the previous day LOL!  :o

Well, that does not matter... it was his life that did... RIP.

Long ago, I read a library book of a POW Doctor's recollections of 'life' and 'treatments' that he performed in Burma. It included very good hand drawn illustrations of the horrific effects of 'Jungle Sores' and improvised treatments for wounds or disease. A guy holding a tin can to catch the fluid draining from his gut via a piece of 'inner tube'!  :'(
There was almost no medical assistance from the Japanese... BUT, their own troops had VERY little medical supplies either. Japanese rations were not all that much better... but could be greatly 'supplemented' by extortion from the local population.  :(

On POW food... I also vaguely remember the astonishment of some Brit Officer POWs in... maybe Colditz... that, due to Red Cross Parcels, THEY had 'better quality' food than some local civilians! Other Ranks camps may not have fared so 'well'... but THEY knew that they were better off than Russian POWs and would sometimes try to help out.  :)

Now, people whine if there is a shortage of Courgettes on the shelves... or I grumble if Ma can only get her toenails clipped every four months! (Have started doing it myself.).  ;D

Breast Cancer takes so many Females... sometimes younger than 39. I have known several. BUT... NOT always a death sentence for those who find lumps.
My Mother had a single mastectomy for a malign at 44. Fine for 20 years... was going to stop check ups... then another found. She is now 88. (Sadly, other health issues have grown)
Think most females 'aware'... but some go into 'denial', and put things off until too late.  :(

Many moons ago now, a male colleague of mine developed breast cancer in his mid-forties. Apparently it is rare in men and tends to affect over-60s but it is not just something that affects women.

Men have a small amount of breast tissue behind the nipples. Lumps in that area should be checked rather than ignored, whatever your sex, gender or orientation!
Title: Re: 2021 Deaths.
Post by: Steve J on 06 September 2021, 06:14:18 AM
Another one taken far too young :(.

I had an inflamed nipple area earlier in the year and went for a check just in case. The doctor checked for breast cancer just in case, but luckily it was just an inflammation. My wife has had some cysts checked at the local breast clinic and each time there have been a few men in there on their own, so more common than most people realise.

Definitely calculators

The calculators tend to have more functions than the default phone calculators and at my daughters' school phones are not allowed to be used in school. And phones are most definitely forbidden in exams.

Obviously by not allowed to be used, doesn't mean the kids don't use them. But they have to do it when teachers aren't around. Whilst I get the rule to avoid distraction, there would be times were it would be helpful if they could use phones.

My protestations that if I were ever trapped in a room on, my own, with no access to textbooks I was highly unlikely to have log tables and a slide rule conveniently to hand but I now carried my calculator regularly so should be able to take into the exam room fell on deaf ears.

I was told it would disturb the other candidates. Not half as much as the sheets of dried seaweed I nibbled during exams, I suspect.

The whole idea of exams has always seemed absurd to me. Perhaps my experience is unusual but I have never found myself trapped in a room with no access to help deperately trying to recall a past participle, Boyles Law, the date of the Repeal of the Corn Laws or the Cosine Rule!!

1842
Followed by 27 January 1846, Peel gave his government's plan. He said that the Corn Laws would be abolished on 1 February 1849 after three years of gradual reductions of the tariff, leaving only a 1 shilling duty per quarter.

Only counts if you knew that and were trapped in a sealed room with no access to help of any sort with the air being sucked out of the room  and the access code to open the door was the date of the repeal. :D :D :D

To be fair, in my Higher History exam I did a compare and contrast between the Repeal of the Corn Laws and the agrarian reforms of the Gracchi brothers, neither of which had been part of our History syllabus.

Got an A (highest possible result at the time, none of this star nonsense) so must have known something - unless the examiner marked me up for sheer chutzpah?

In my education diploma I had to answer the question "What is God's plan for the universe?" (2 marks) I got a first for my answer without lying or compromising my atheist principles, probably because I said if I knew the mind of the Almighty I'd dam' well expect more than two marks for it.

:) :) :) :)

I'm reminded of my philosophy tutor's story of a classmate of his who had given very full answers in one of his final's papers but realised that, as a result, he only had a few moments with one answer to go.

Spotting a question

is this a question

He apparently got full marks for his answer

if it is a question this is an answer

Rightly so, in my opinion.

Are you sure?  My brother got an A* for his ECONOMICS 'A' level in the 1960s.  It was, we were told, given to the top 100 marks in the country.

I was certainly told that an A was the top possible in 1970 in Scotland

I can assure you that England's top mark was an A in 1982.
Though different exam boards, and some fancy subjects might have differed.

As for knowing your grade ranking: It always seemad to be the same kids whose uncle was in the SAS and was an astronaut. Just saying.

According to my wife's uncle Billy, whenever he was away on holiday, he invariably stayed in the same hotels as guys who were in the SAS or (at the bare minimum) the Paras. But, for some reason, didn't mind sharing their stories with Billy and whoever else was in the bar...

There was an local loon who claimed to have done SAS training... wore a purple track suit and 'drove' a beach buggy with no petrol cap... and it didn't work, anyway!

Aw.

But , it's rather weird... I have never seen 'Fools & Horses'... just odd clips. From late 80s to smoking ban, I never watched TV apart from recorded Time Team, or some docs.
It was my 'down the Pub' era... and any 'viewing' was late night DVDs... movies, or sets of old stuff... Sweeney, Callan... So... much of 'Brit culture', 90s, 2000s...just isn't there.
Glad that TV got others laughing... some good characters in various shows... and sad to see them going.  :(
