Yes, that's my problem with many modern games (computer and board based) in a nutshell. A good game is not one I win, it's one I  still enjoy if I lose. A bad game is not a game I lose it's one I don't enjoy even if I win.

I'm a solo wargamer by choice. For me, the game is the thing, not the result. I have before now played a scenario, then played it again because I enjoyed it so much. For me it is the game and not the rules. I can't be fashed with panicking about whether I have 7 figures on a 20mm wide base, whether that unit on my left flank is unwashed or just short of Lynx Africa, or if my general can see over that house that represents Cologne.

I get great pleasure out of a unit that holds when it should have fled; a lucky shot that disables a Tiger tank, or a sudden downpour that renders those pesky flintlocks unusable just as my cavalry charge is launched.

In some ways, I've been driven to solo gaming by the rule-lawyers that I have encountered, more concerned with Page 16 para 4 rather than having a bit of fun.

For me, a good game is easy to learn, hard to master, has enough of a skill element that I win because I was clever and enough luck that if I lose it was because I was unlucky :)

EDIT: Team play can also be useful - my team wins because of my brilliance or loses due to the incompetence of my allies!

Very well said those men  =D> =D> =D>

I have been very very fortunate in my gaming life to have met almost exclusively like minded individuals who focus on the challenge and the fun

"a lucky shot that disables a Tiger tank" - I still remember a Marmon Herington armoured car getting behind a Pz IV and killing it, much to the shock of all involved  :) :D

:o I'm agreeing with FSN again, does this mean I might need the blue pills?  ;D

Start with the pink ones Paul.....They're safer. (I think  ;))

I am usually quite lucky as well

I killled a Tiger once with a Humber

I also shot down a flight of Apache helicoptors with a stupid little anti aircraft gun
If I were creating Pendraken I wouldn't mess about with Romans and  Mongols  I would have started with Centurions , eight o'clock, Day One!

Hertsblue

Shot of the season for us was the eighty-eight that violently disassembled a Curtis Tomahawk on a low-level strafing run. I can't begin to calculate the odds against that.  :o
When you realise we're all mad, life makes a lot more sense.

Awwwwww.......Pants !

Looks like I'll have to replace one of my most useful pieces of kit, this morning.
I think my dear old Dremmel has given up the ghost.

And it 'bit' me last night when I forgot to unplug it when it was in pieces !
Managed to cobble it back together to work in a fashion (of sorts) by removing a couple of wee bits that were badly worn.....But it'll be a pain to change the drills and burrs from now on.....So Argos, here we come.  :'(

Can't really complain....I must have been using this particular one for around twenty years.....and have only had to replace the brushes a couple of times.....But it's definitely been going a bit 'strange' on me for two or three weeks.

Anyone else ever mourned or really missed a favourite bit of kit that you've used for a long time ?

Cheers - Phil

Not mourned but left feeling 'lighter financially' when some thieving bar-steward stole a pair of binos that were in 'my custody'. As they're a *starred* item there was a Regimental Board of Enquiry and I was lucky to escape with a fine. Thankfully I got to keep my rank...
I don't think my wife likes me very much, when I had a heart attack she wrote for an ambulance.

Actually it looks like I might need to start looking for a new X-acto knife since the ring that tightens the holder is beginning to break up...
Can't really omplain either for I've used it for about 20 years or more. Then again; when I buy a new one i'll probably just use the new ring so the 'feel' of the old knife remains. Silly really...  ;)

Techno

Today's safety tip from Techno.

When rushing to play (safely) with the electrics outside.....DON'T try and force the screwdriver set back in the 'useful' drawer in the kitchen, when you've finished....Just in case there's a rusty Stanley knife blade set in a scraper, in said drawer.....Just waiting for your fingers...Whoops !
Blood, spurt, murder !
I didn't want to finish off those Romans off today, anyway. Expletive deleted. !! >:( >:( >:( >:(

Cheers - A Twerp.

I've never killed a tiger, but I've stroked a few; much more satisfying and just as alarming.
I don't drink coffee to wake up. I wake up to drink coffee.

Sadly...I would have to admit to being rather accident prone.....Usually when I'm rushing about, and my brain goes even more awol than usual.
Having said that...The deepest cut has sealed nicely and I'm not leaving blood on the keyboard as I type.....Huzzah !

I'm tempting fate, I know, but when I do do something that I perceive as being totally blanking stupid, after the event......I can always look back and think...."That could have been 100 times worse."

Cheers - Phil. ( And I promise I'll try not to electrocute myself this afto' when I go and play with the outdoors' electrics again......Remind me.....The BIG switch on the box of gubbins outside goes DOWN to cut the power.....doesn't it ?)
