Apparently I know some stuff about this. Allegedly my inane rambling about C17th military clothing is to be published, something I find mildly amusing.

You have 2 options. You could go the flamboyant route and use contemporary portraits as your inspiration. Or you could go the Occam's Razor route and give them buff coats. Thomas Fairfax famously found himself in the wrong place on a battlefield and simply removed his sash to return to where he should have been (which is strongly suggestive of him wearing boring buff).

Flags? Only Charles and Rupert are known to have had personal banners. But don't let that get in the way of your toy soldiers (I haven't). Most men of note were colonels of horse - I've used their personal troop cornets as commander's flags. See the new and improved BCW regimental wiki for flag images. Silly me. Described as neare fifteen feet long at 1st Newbury, it would be captured at Marston Moor. It was Charlie's banner, aka the Royal Standard, that was taken at Edgehill.

The Royal Standard was only temporarily in Parliament hands, it was recaptured before the end of the battle.

...and certainly had a run out at 1st Newbury where it was described in eye witness accounts.

For those that don't know, the story of Verney's severed hand still holding the standard was a Victorian embellishment, first appearing in 1892.
