LED Light box

Received a small LED Lightbox today - I got mine of ali express (about £5, two weeks delivery).

Empire Camp - desk light

Empire Camp - light box

Both photos have had minimal post production work, just cropping and an auto balance.

Yes - I'm thinking the same. The snake riders look much better in the light box. The camp less so, but the light box gives a more even light.

I also like that as it is higher up, I am taking the shot from the figure's height rather than overhead.

What I don't like is that I am seeing so many messy bits of painting and basing with supersize photos  :(

Oh Ghu alone yes - I look at painted stuff, think I've done a nice job, take a photo and look on the phone, think it's still decent, look at it on a decent monitor and cry :D

I have to remind myself that it's 10mm, and blown up to 1/32nd it's not going to be good ;)

The camp's come out better - the rider in the first shot looks HUGE, far bigger than the other figures but the angle in the second plus I guess more even light makes him less IN YOUR FACE so he's in scale? The bright tent and flags do look a bit subdued tho.

The rider is Kalistra so is big. The troops at the front are GW, so pretty comparable with Pendraken historicals.

Ah, he's twelve going on fifteen, and the foot are ten going on ten then :D

Yeah, ok, no wonder he looks big!

Nice comparison shots, Forbes.

I think I'll have to invest in one of those, at some stage.

Best Brown

Making good use of the local Homebase closing down sale, I picked up a big pot of brown emulsion - claims to be chocolate, but not sure myself.

I'd got some sheets of A3 MDF a while ago to make terrain bases, to replace the rather basic bits of funky foam I have been using.

So I painted the MDF, when you use a proper decorating brush (2.5" in width) not a tiny hobby brush you can paint a lot of flat stuff very quickly. Very glad I painted these before cutting.

Decided to paint the ovals of bright blue foam I use for hills too.

This was about half-way though. The MDF has had a coat of paint on both sides, and I have added sand to the still wet top coat.
I have given the hill ovals a coat on each side. They eventually got another coat to cover the blue fully (and to cover the edges).

Once the sand had stuck, I gave another patchy coat to 4 of the boards to use for temperate ground, left the other 4 for desert. Then added a dry brush to al the boards. And decided the desert ones were too dark so added a couple of heavy dry brushes of sandy shades to them.

Very interesting at the top of the page - today I acquired a Warmaster Empire army, which will be joining the ranks of my Italian Wars stuff.

The camp? Yep GW Empire generally works well for Italian wars. You may need to file off a bunch of skulls though!
