The 1806 Prussians are uniquely handicapped, it's brilliant!
The infantry get a bonus for volley fire (range 1 base width) which they pay for in their unit costing, however, skirmish and charge range is 2 base widths, so the French will always have the drop on you.
You cannot move and fire, so if you park a unit inside volley range, the odds are the next turn you will either get sniped or charged!
This also means you have less Prussian units on table.
Brilliant idea Mr Mustapha! :D

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Frostgrave
2) What armies were confronted? - Two necromancers and an Elementalist
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Very, at least two of us are and the third had played through the Dark Alchemy mini-campaign to get up to spec
4) and... was the first time do you use the ruleset? - About a year in for me, six months for one and fourth game for the third.
5) How many players were in the game? - Three

We played one of the Liche Lord scenarios, Battle on the Ice, across the frozen river running thru the city - bulk of the table is the iced over river covered with frozen ships, then banks either side. Makes moving fast really tricky. Part way through the game one of the Liche Lords minions pops up from the middle ship and tries to run off with some vital to his plans treasure.

Everyone got stuck in fast, with the second Necromancer foolishly dividing his forces to face the other two of us. The newer Elementalist used a combo of Wall spells and Telekinesis along side his cheap soldiers to secure three treasures and leg it after fighting off the other Necromancers troops facing him. Meanwhile my band converged on the remaining soldiers and apprentice, my wizard got shot up then blew himself up miscasting a spell, an opposing Thug took down two Treasure Hunters and Knight (AND i had two or three to one numbers!) before falling to my wardog, but my better troops and weight fo numbers told and despite one to one losses I forced him off with no treasure securing all the rest for me, lovely.

Towards the end the Liche Lords mage minion popped up, and as the dice had it ran for my table edge. Ah ha, I thought, easy treasure! ZAP and he dropped my other Knight, then beat down several more in close combat, and only went down finally because I surrounded him with soldiers and beat him to death en mass.

Good game, great fun, and loads of TREASURE and XP, hurrah!

Firepower trait is less useful than Skirmish, I'd agree - but when you do get to shoot (which is reasonably often, in general), it's better as you get an advantage with full dice not half. Skirmish edges it out, but volley fire is by no means unlikely to occur. Note the Late War list drops Firepower for skirmish, reflecting historical practise.

It might hurt from a game viewpoint, but from a historical viewpoint its very much on target :D

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Space Hulk (1ed)
2) What armies were confronted? Aliens Genestealers v Colonial Terminator Marines
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Very, but some players either had never played or hadn't played in years
4) and... was the first time do you use the ruleset? - No, absolutely not
5) How many players were in the game? - Three (one Alien genestealer got stuck in Time & Space Liverpool) plus me running the scenario

Great fun, the alien player reported to his absent colleague:

QuoteWe failed! The marines succeeded in blowing up the hulk - and even escaped with 8 out of their original complement of 18! The Hivemind was not well pleased!

Was a great game though - and remarkably well balanced. Andrew and Kyle struggled at first (particularly Kyle) but - with a bit of help & advice from Zip and I especially about the tactical use of flamers - once they got the hang of it they really 'rocked'. Andrew's overwatch shooting was lethal. And his captain was definitely man-of-the-match/MVP, leading from the front the whole way and personally seeing off the last stealer assault in the final room with some well aimed overwatch shooting and even getting up-close-and-personal with his power sword to hold the line!

Sorry to have lost [the shame! the shame!] - but plaudits to Andrew and Kyle for a well-earned win!

Next week back to D&D

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - If the Lord Spares Us
2) What armies were confronted? ANZAC's vs Ottomans Suvla Bay April 1915
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Yes, but hadn't played for some months
4) and... was the first time do you use the ruleset? - No
5) How many players were in the game? - Four

We were originally going to play this game around ANZAC Day but it been delayed a few times for various reasons but finally started last night. I came up with a bit of an alternative scenario that sees the ANZAC's going ashore at the flat plains near Suvla Bay rather than the vertical terrain at ANZAC cove. The game is ongoing with the ANZAC's about to engage the main Ottoman trench line having fairly easily rolled up the outlying defence works.

One of the advantages of our usual gaming venue (Roy's Place) is that he has a huge table (17ft x 5ft) and we can leave games set up without them being disturbed, unless Roy's cat feels adventurous. Though being winter here she prefers hybernating next to the logburner than anything too strenuous  ;)

We were definitely a bit rusty on the rules but seem to have got back into the flow. The Kiwis are making good progress despite some shorts from the Royal Navy and the scenario is definitely interesting ;)

The opening French artillery salvo was devastating which helped a lot. But it could have gone horribly wrong. The French cavalry forgot they had sabres and the grenadiers were thrown back. It was left to the grognards to win it. Even then, the French lost 3 units quickly near the end in a failed attempt to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory :o Fast forward to the 100 Days on Thursday.

Hi Guys

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Impetus
2) What armies were confronted? Late Republican Romans v Gauls
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Yes, some good mechanisms which although fairly abstract give a good overall feel of what I think an ancient battle should be like. You need to be prepared for occasional extreme outcomes and light cavalry can be devastating.
4) and... was the first time do you use the ruleset? - No
5) How many players were in the game? - 2

Another good game, although the Romans are proving impossible very hard to beat (and yes I commanded the Gauls)!
