What Ruleset Did You Use In Your Last Game 2016

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Baroque.
2) What armies were confronted? - 15mm Early War Royalists v Parliamentarian
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - More or less, but as this was a bigger game with 4 commands per side it threw up a few situations that needed to be looked up in the rules.
4) and... was the first time do you use the ruleset? - No, probably 4th game by now.
5) How many players were in the game? - 4, two on each side with about 650 points and 4 commands per side.

Loosely based on the battle of Whalley in 1643, I used the terrain and deployment of the original battle but added in extra units and totally made up command figures.

The Scots valiantly hold onto the enclosure by Reads hall. (There were no Scots at the real battle but as John had painted up some we thought it best to use them).


End result: a draw as we ran out of time. We played 'one last turn' as so many Commands were close to breaking but none of them actually did. It really could have gone either way but people needed to leave with quite a distance to travel. A great fun game though and played in the right spirit with plenty of banter too!

Was that each command at 650pts so 1300pts per side, or 650 in two commands of @325pts  per?

Thanks for the kind comments guys, I used my little tripod for the photos, it has bendy legs, ideal for getting into good positions for photos.
The game was 650 points per side with 4 commands per side, certainly our biggest game yet but with 4 of us painting and collecting the armies grow quite quickly.

So that's a couple of units per command, plus a general? Doesn't seem much but I guess with the action/reactions, small command ranges and not losing your impetus bonus till Exhausted its still a decent amount of grunt for a player?

I'm currently in the throes of putting four armies together in 2mm and the suggested 600pts per side with three commanders only comes to about eight or nine units per army, which seems very small...

650 points a side with 4 commands was between 2-4 units per command. Previously we tried larger commands and it proved difficult to break anyone. We are still getting used to the rules but do like them. Another problem we have is that when we all get together for a game we chat too much about future projects, current projects etc... :)

Sounds like us, Bodvoc. A 90 minute game takes three hours as there's pre-game faff & chat, in game faff & chat, and then "oh sh!t, we've not finished and it's nearly pack up time!" faff & chat.

Ok, cool, you've found a 2-4 unit command is enough to keep interest for a player? Nice to know, my usual group plays a lot of Impetus and we usually have a command each which tends to give 6-9 or so units, so I'm a bit wary about the higher cost, lower unit count in Baroque but they do seem "meatier" :)

Back to paid work 10mm C18th tricorns for me, until Irregular deliver my personal 2mm ECW bits and bobs and I slip back to Baroque :)

Ten More Sons!, two players, Burmese vs Indians. I had superior artillery but elected to attack in a rainstorm in the hope that the superior Moghul cavalry would be neutralised by a muddy field. Hmmm...mainly neutralised my own shooting.

If we had been doing a two player game then I would probably have gone with 3 commands per 650 points but as we were a group of 4 players I went for 4 commands, two each to keep everyone in the game and it seemed to work out OK. Typical of me, one of my commanders  Level 1) threw a double 1 on the second turn, dropping a level to incompetent and then proceeded to throw a double most turns in the Initiative phase which meant he could not issue commands that turn! This meant my whole command of horse spent most of the game dithering :(
When we play Impetus we normally have larger commands too.

Being 2mm, even in my limited personal painting time and funds I can knock up four armies, and as I've gone with 60mm base widths they'll fit on a 2ft by 1.5ft ish board, so I can get four people playing at the club :) Don't think that'll lend itself in just sheer tiny physical size for two players per side but might fire them into getting an army :)
