I too have a lot of stuff lying around... Napoleonic French, Austrian and British, and Flames of War germans that need to be done... and two entire armies of 6mm that I havent decided what to do with yet.

I think its also important to have multiple projects of different "types", ie 15mm and 10mm, modern and napoleonic, so that when you get bored painting brown, green and dunkelgelb, you can switch over to painting Napoleonic French, and once that gets tedious painting all that line infantry, paint some Austrian Uhlans, and so on. Diversifying is important so you dont get the painters block from repetitive tediousness.

That said, I haven't touched my Flames of War in a while - just not that inspired with the ruleset anymore, and Battlefront and I have put our relationship on hold (like many others).

There are, I believe, other WWII rulesets ;)

Have to agree with 026 - multiple projects keep me and my painting fresh, hence the 15mm Belgians at the mo. I particularly like the headswaps I can do with the PP figures.

Far too much unfinished, like most of us I guess?   :(

At the moment (started but not yet finished):

28mm
GW Dark Elf army (for AoS)
Bolt Action Russians to finish (mostly cavalry)
AVBCW to finish (mostly bicyclists, and other weirdness)
Necromunda gang
Mordheim terrain board
Perry Samurai (for Ronin)
4 boxes of Perry WotR soldiers to build and add to my army, plus about 20 metal cavalry
GW 40k Space Marines (repaint job from Raven Guard to Crimson Fists - plus add ons)
GW 40k Ork army (some of the vehicles have been pinched and used for my VSF 28mm collection, re: In Her Majesy's Name...)
GW Bretonnians (which i'm painted for use with Lions Rampant

15mm
Russians (ImagiNation) for Maurice
Medieval Swedish (for DBM)

10mm
Warband dwarf army
Warband goblin army
Warband barbarian army
Pd FPW French army
Pd Russian Napoleonic army

Other
Dystopian Wars Empire of the Sun additions (mostly rocket escorts, & flying aircraft carrier)

Uh...all that depresses me...

And then coming up are Warband undead and taurians, and of course a 28mm fantasy army for Dragon's Rampant...

Maybe this is why i'm playing X-Wing a lot.  No painting!!!   ;D
