Hey guys,

Got the new d&d boardgame (temple of elemental evil) delivered this morning. Now i started wondering, now that i have all 4 of the boardgames, i have a crapload of fantasy/d&d miniatures in 28mm. Would be a waste not to do some skirmish games with them!

Any one got some suggestions for nice (and cheap  :P) rules for this? Song of blades and heroes is on sale on wargamevault at the moment, but wanted to see if there was something else. Looking especially something where i can put the 'd&d feel' in. Song of blade and heroes does that through the special rules i think, anyone got experience with them? It would of course be mostly heroes VS monsters.

Thanks in advance!

fred.

Songs of Blades and heroes is good. Its fairly simple but still has enough depth to it. It actually has a lot in common with Warband when it comes to mechanisms.

Simple is good, means i can play it with the boy  :D

Anyway the bundle with the first 4 books, including the core book, is 25% off on wargame vault in case anyone is interested!

I like SoBH, but there's a whole slew of possible stuff - Mordheim has a living rule book, there's Frostgrave just come out. Possibly Dragon Rampant as/when it's released? The old D&D miniatures was fun, IIRC...

Maybe even the old Pendraken fantasy dungeon crawl rules? Not quite skirmish, but a simple dungeon delve, where the boy can play the whole party versus the monsters?

What were those rules like? Map based?

toxicpixie

Yes, they used the D&D map sheets gridded out in squares with a very simplified "not quite 3.5 era" rules set as a straight tactical combat game...

There's Swordplay from Two Hour Wargames.  It's an easy system and works great for solo, added bonus is it's free.

Bear in mind it uses the 2Hr Wargames reaction system so there's a very good chance won't do what you want once
battle commences.

I have that one, but find it a bit confusing actually, Must read it again one time to see how it actually works.

I asked for a skirmish game, not a central table mosh pit  ;D ;D

Savage Worlds' Showdown, click on the link here for the FREE pdf: https://www.peginc.com/product-category/savage-worlds/ or here direct to the pdf: https://www.peginc.com/freebies/Showdown/Showdown.pdf

Must admit I haven't used the Showdown rules per se, but have used the RPG rules for moderately complex combats.

Showdown is basically a stripped-down version of the RPG, missing the skills and other less relevant systems.

Cheers!

(I know, even though it's fantasy  :o  ;)  )
