New to 10mm...FPW and Marlburian

Hi Folks,

I'm a newcomer to Pendraken and more specifically 10 mm figures. When I first saw photos of some of the 18th/19th century ranges, I was staggered by the detail and particularly the balanced physical shape of the figures.

Could never have imagined myself painting this scale but it seems to be going quite well; any painting tips will be appreciated - does anyone favour particular brands of paints and brushes ? (I use mostly Vallejo, sometimes Miniature Paints or Coat D'Arms).

I'm concentrating on Franco Prussian War and War of Spanish Succession. Does anyone have recommendations for reference material/sources regarding uniform colours. I've ordered CS Grant's books on WSS (Partizan Press).

I think Partizan also do a book on Prussian troops of the Franco Prussian War but it seems to be quite expensive - worth the money?

I use Vallejo and am very happy with them

I am also a big fan of washes to add depth and emphasis. 

I will leave it to the several experts on the forum to answer your FPW & WSS questions

I'll leave it to those that paint the wee chaps far more frequently than myself. 
I'm pretty certain there are a number of 'articles' on the forum already, which are definitely worth a look......Probably in the painting section. (Said he, guessing wildly.)

(I expect one of the others will do that well before me ! 
I'd vote for Vallejo too.

The above book is full of info but the production quality is absolute pants   , text is about size 8 most of it was smudged and could not be read, illustrations were the same, tried contacting the author about it but got no response ended up retyping the text in the  book so I could read it.

FrancoPrussian War is one of my favourites (eight corps and counting).
The Osprey guides are good, The Prussian pair are definitely better than the French...

Would heartily recommend Coat d'Arms Deadly Nightshade Blue as a base coat...

Hi Peter, welcome to the melee scrum forum.

For the WSS - any or all of the Editions Brokaw booklets. And I would add the Osprey Campaign title Ramillies 1706 to the list of useful volumes, and James Falkner's Great and Glorious Days covering Marlborough's greatest actions.

For the FPW, The Franco-Prussian War by Michael Howard is reckoned the definitive work. Quintin Barry's The Franco-Prussian War 1870-71 is a readable acount. Volume 1 covers the Sedan Campaign. David Ascoli's A Day of Battle covers the seminal Battle of Mars-la-Tour in detail. Two Osprey titles are useful; The Franco-Prussian War 1870-1871 by Stephen Badsey, which is a potted history of the war, and Gravelotte-St. Privat 1870 by Philipp Elliot-Wright, an account of the destruction of the French forces under Bazaine.

Hope all this isn't too overwhelming.

Some forums (or is the plural 'forae', 'forai'!!!!) look intriguing but once you've registered it becomes clear that it's hardly used at all; last post was before the early Roman Empire that you happen to be researching!!!

Thanks for the guidance though as it's always good to get clarification of what's good or not - and what is, or isn't, readily available!
Being the difficult sort I am, I'm targeting the Italian campaigns from 1700-1710; could be some interesting scenarios there? I have the book by N Henderson on Eugene of Savoy which has a few chapters on this and I believe the CS Grant books also cover this theatre of the war.
HOWEVER, ANY IDEAS ON ADDITIONAL BOOKS FOR THESE CAMPAIGNS AND PERIOD, IN GENERAL, WOULD BE WELCOME.

Hi and welcome.
I can't give you any help on your chosen periods but for painting 10mm figures I undercoat in black then heavy dry brush with main colour, pick out the detail and get them based up!

Have been using Vallejo Prussian blue which is good but always worth while trying something else.

Leading on from that, here's a geeky Nerd one - do you know if the colour of Prussian uniforms, of the period, was consistent?

I doubt whether any uniform colours of the period were consistent. The vegetable dyes used were subject to fading after a relatively short period. And in any case conventional wisdom says that when painting small figures it's best to use a slightly lighter shade.

I would also suspect that there would be variations based on dye quality, fading, etc but note I know almost nothing on this particular period 

From a painting perspective I find variation in colour really helps bring a unit to life. One option is to use the same base colour but highlight differently.
In my ITLSU 1914 project I used a different highlight for each of jacket, pants and hat/puttees in different combinations.
