Hope it's not too uncomfortable LH.

Finally have dates and times. 1st Sept for a 1 - 2 hour check that I won't peg it if they put me under. If that's OK, in on Sunday 21st for the op itself.

Good to finally have an appointment, better still if I didn't need one in the first place!!

AFTER TYPING ALL THIS I REALISE THIS MAY BE TOO MUCH INFO.  It is meant to reassure. Warning over.

Ok, the op is fine - you get a general and wake up some where else.  Not sure on your timings, I had to be at the Day theatre at 7:30 am (they do other kinds- there aren't that many men wanting it to mutilate themselves!). No eating after midnight the day before, only clear liquids (NOT VODKA/GIN) after 12, nothing after 6am.

A doc (he wasn't the consultant) goes through things with you, gets you to sign consent. Ask questions here- they are professionals so I asked about um 'Morning glory' etc.

Anaesthetist talks through the General with you, how you will have a breathing tube down your throat after you are out.

Nurse will explain the prep - what you wear, no jewelry except wedding ring, measure you for surgical stockings etc. She will take blood pressure/heart rate.  They want you to go to the toilet even if you think you are empty - again I think this is because of the general.

They will all ask you the same questions - allergies, dental work, health etc.  This is all because of the general.  They always ask permission before doing anything- "Is it ok to put this needle in you" and they explained all the time.  They in the Prep you are on the trolley, they put a cannula into your 'off' fore-arm - this is the needle which takes the drugs in.  They put an oxygen mask on you. First up is a strong pain killer via the cannula, then an anti nausea drug for when you wake then... well that is the last thing I remember.

Woke up in recovery.  You may want to vomit- they know this; I didn't- I felt fine.

YOU MUST HAVE A ADULT TOO LOOK AFTER YOU FOR THE NEXT 48 HOURS.  You can't go home alone, you need to be looked after.  You are not even supposed to boil a kettle (because if you pass out you will drop it down your self.  Told my eldest he is my Tea Bitch tomorrow.

You are VERY tender - try and get a spare dressing out of them - I wish I had. Its like a nappy for the old chap. Make sure you have lots of strong pain killers on hand. Wear loose clothing - I am in my M&S Nightshirt (yeah very Dickens.) (hehe DICKens).

Stoke Mandeville were wonderful. The staff were understanding - they didn't say 'Don't be a wimp' to me.

Try not to look at it. You'll be upset.

Peeing while it is still asleep is weird - You can't tell you are going (I was sitting so I didn't have to hold it).

Thanks LH - deffo not TMI for me - useful to have some info from someone who's just been through it.

Clearly there are genetics involved in this for me - I'm just discovering how many family members (Ooh Err Missus!) have had the op and told no one until I was open about what I was having done.

Thing to remember - I don't know if you will have to arrange your life - the list of things you shouldn't do for 48 hours after a General is sign any legal papers.  I got the impression that they are not legally valid.  I feel fine, a little muzzy, but that could be because apart from the General, I've only managed 3 hours sleep since waking up on Monday (2 on Tues morning because of nerves, 1 between 4-5 this morning)

My eldest is the Legal Adult supervising me at the moment - as he said at the weekend "I'm 18 now, I'm a vaguely responsible adult!"  Mind you he is still a teen, so will be asleep until 1pm!
