I hope this is an ok thing to say, but on the baccus 6mm site there are painting guides for acw uniforms, if you don't want to spend lots there perfect!

The old Almark titles - American Civil War Cavalry and American Civil War Infantry both by Michael Blake are good. You can sometimes find them lurking on bring-and-buy stalls.

An Illustrated Encyclopaedia Of Military Uniforms Of The Nineteenth Century turned out not to be as good as I was hoping for the European theatres, but has a surprisingly good and large section on the ACW. It's out there on Amazon.
