But what is a stifle....apart from a bit of a horse ?
If you (one) say (s) something on PMT that certain folk find 'iffy'....Do they try and 'stifle' your comment ?......Is that the idea ?
I ask purely for information. :)
Cheers - Phil.

Yes that's it, if you stifle someone you will not see any of their comments, so the PMT equivalent of  X_X

Its just a "mute" button really; once they stifle you they can't read any of your posts. However the reason its a big issue is that the amount of these stifles you accumulate is displayed in your profile. Why an individual's private decision to ignore you appears on your public profile I don't know, other than to suggest that someone with lots of them is disagreeable.
It leads to silliness such as competing to accumulate the most stifles, stifling of anyone who brings up the topic of stifles, stifling of newly joined members, creating profiles just to stifle people (though I think that is against the rules as is eliminated where found). The whole thing is a big distraction.
I found recently that after not having posted for a while I put up a link to the story about wargames figures appearing on the Antiques Roadshow. I got two stifles as a reward. It doesn't encourage posting does it?

Thanks Clib....I think I understand.....Perhaps ! :-\
But I can't see the point of that at all.
I'm probably missing something....Unless it's supposed to be a 'personal insult' back at the original poster that's been 'stifled' ? :-\
"I don't want to know your opinions....You're a big poo !".....Is that it ?
Seems odd to an old f*rt like yours truly.

Yep, that's pretty much it.

TMP is becoming a place where you can spend as much time reading about the latest shenanigans of the membership as about wargaming. Its still the biggest and most useful single site on the web, but I could do without the infighting that goes on.

This is all new to me ;D just checked mine and only got one...yes I know guys I must try harder hohoho, but in my defense I hardly ever post and get few replies so i'm doing quite well :D. I honestly find that place a joke full of saddos, so try to avoid it if I can, but i'll make it a personal challenge to upset more  :d
Have a great weekend, All the best

Let me just try and get my head around this.

Let's say...for example...I posted something that Sean above (using him as an example)..took exception to, and he decided that he didn't want to read any more of my waffling.

But then if I posted something new.....Which Sean wouldn't see..(have I got this right ?) ......and someone replied...Sean would only see the reply..Which surely wouldn't make any sense. ?
I'm completely lost !  (no change there then) ;D ;D ;D ;D
Cheers - Phil.

I always reckoned it was the Cubans that annoyed them the most..Oh and apparently the German Chancellor
If I were creating Pendraken I wouldn't mess about with Romans and  Mongols  I would have started with Centurions , eight o'clock, Day One!

seano1815

;D ;D ;D ;D i'll second that Phil I must be getting older 8). As the site goes I may have been overly critical it does have some good stuff on it, with some great posts as here. the only difference I have noticed is a little cyber bullying creeping in, which I find hard to stomach as I do with any form of bullying. I much prefer here :D all the best

Yep, that's pretty much it.  And anyone can click on any other member to see how many Stifles they've got, ie how many people don't want to read that persons posts.

To make it fairer, every profile should also show how many people that person has stifled themselves, so that you can see who the easily offended are...  :D

yeah there does seem to be a trend in cyber bullying now you mention it. One guy, Tango01 on there gets loads of stick just because he posts random bits of gaming related stuff that has sometimes been posted before, even so you end up missing it in the first place they still bully him like mad.

Its not cricket. Just recently I got put in the same category as a car thief because someone else suggested a guy do a scan his friends OOP spacehulk tiles so he could have a game for nostalgias sake (I just agreed!) I am surprised that I didn't pick up a few stifles in the process!
I wouldn't mind if i had been on top insulting form, but it wasn't. No surprise that they were yanks who waded in with the moralising. (not that I have owt against anyone from the US, my gran was north american)

Mind you, it wasn't too long ago right here, I made a throw away comment about the game "maurice" sounding like a gay 70's hairdresser rather than a name that would inspire a wargame, but that seemed to go down badly, leading one to accuse me of homophobia or closet tendancies or some other crap. Mind you, thats internet forums of any kind, you'll never please everyone that reads what you write. (I still think maurice is an awful name for a game... :o)

While i do enjoy a good web trolling sesh occasionally as I did in my early web youth, I try to turn the other cheek now since ultimately its a pointless task. (a bit like listening too much to the wife... ;))

Aha !
That seems to have some sort of logic....I think I'm beginning to understand now.
And I'd agree with your second point as well Leon. :)

Perhaps the stifler should give a reason for it so the recipient has some idea how they have caused offence and can therefore amend their behaviour if they so wish.
Not that I'm ever going to frequent that den of iniquity ever again though!

WeeWars

You don't need to cause offence to be stifled.
It might just be that you state a preference for or against something like 10mm or 28mm or Games Workshop or Napoleon.
You could see the stifle button as some forum members' lazy attempt at limiting the amount they feel compelled to read.
For example, that last remark would get me stifled.

Very true which makes it even more important that a reason needs to be given
