Along the same lines, i've often wondered if the Hartlepool monkey hanging tale is just a myth as well. But its much too insulting to let go of.   

From the sources that I've seen....Apparently true....But who knows for sure....'Urban legend' or not ?

I married a Geordie, and my young brother was trying to write his best man's speech. My uncle generously offered as an opening line "who hung the monkey?"
