Hoarding is cited as one of the factors behind it so are wargamers part of the cause?

Never really used coins have always preferred washer (which I got cheaper that pennies at the time i.e. free) and now MDF as I want all my bases to match even if it does cost a tad more (but in the great scheme of things compared to other stuff we purchase the cost is almost negligible)

I use 10ps for command bases: tried to get washers of the same size but they worked out at 11p each

I'd quite happily lose them to be honest, they just sit in my wallet for months and then get thrown in the change jar, or my 'spare change' ashtray in the car.  Although they are handy for giving the kids when they're pestering for some money.  The 3-year old especially is still fooled by the '20 x 1p coins must be more than a single £1 coin..' mentality.

NZ got rid of 1c and 2c pieces about 15 years ago, as they were costing more to produce than they were worth. I think they've also dropped the 5c piece as well. We've also had plastic notes for ages too - they last a lot longer than paper notes (which I was told have a life span of about 6 months), and are impossible to forge.

Umm, my little bucket of coppers is a problem? I just throw all my coppers in the bucket, when I need bases 2p for 28mm and 1p for 15mm and 20mm singles. everything else goes on proper Minibits MDF.

On the odd occasion when the bucket gets to the brim, it goes to ASDA and into their change machine. It's worked well for years!

Yes, each of my rubberised horsehair trees has a a 2p piece buried in its base to make it more stable. I'd be glad to lose most coins, in fact, all they do is wear holes in my trouser pockets. 

1p and 2p coins are vital. I actually base my 28mm figs. on 1p before painting, then model the groundwork then base them up and do the groundwork for the larger base. It means my figures don't get too much dry brush over their feet and legs.

I use 1 and 5 Euro cents for individual officers on foot and mounted, respectively. The 5 cent coins are also good for 6mm command groups.  Coins picked up on regular returns to the Continent.
