If I were creating Pendraken I wouldn't mess about with Romans and  Mongols  I would have started with Centurions , eight o'clock, Day One!

I dont think you can go Portabello Road, I haven't got them to hand but I think under the 1975 amended challenge rules you can only go Euston Station or Cromwell road, though I am sure someone here has the rules to hand to confirm this

Go to a garden shop selling grass mats (I got mine in a Lydl Store for about a fiver each). They`re as big as the GW mats, MUCH thicker and sturdier, and a tiny fraction of the price.

I have two, because they`re so good. One to cover my 6 foot table; the other to cut down to smaller size for my skirmish games.
