Hello All

Yes I'm looking to counterfeit Chinese Interwar and WW2 uniforms!! Do you think this will bring howls of 'theft of  intellectual property' etc from the Middle Kingdom!!  :D.

WW1 British have the southern Interwar/warlord period sown up.
?Russo-Japanese Japanese for Northern Interwar/warlord?? Peaked cap is more of a 'pork pie' type
Was thinking RCW reds with the budenovka point filed off for winter wear. Or even more drastic - SCW regular winter with tunic extended and head swaps. Any thoughts?

Can anybody tell me what the WW1 Austrians in cap are wearing - puttees or cuffed trousers? The machine gun team seems to be in cuffed trousers.
Edit - I found a picture, they seem to be in cuffed trousers - curses, another cunning plan out the window!!

Do all of the helmeted WW1 Germans and Austrians come only with boots or are they puttee types??

Any thoughts or suggestions??

Cheers

Okay, this is all stuff I remember, some of it from before the internet!

I once saw a picture of an interwar/yearly WWII Chinese infantryman and he looked like a German WWI 1917-18 soldier. No pack or anything, but he did look a lot like the figures in GP6, Stormtroopers. The picture was in 'faux colour' and looked like a very blue-grey. He was also wearing round rimmed glasses, but I think we can discount that in 10mm.

All the 1914, Austro-Hungarians I have have cuffed trousers, later war A-H's are almost the same as late war Germans again I don't think it matters much in 10mm.

All the late war WWI Germans I have are wearing puttees except the officers who are wearing boots.

Hope this is of some use.

Hello Steeleye

Thanks for the reply ( I could swear that I answered this post yesterday but it doesn't seem to have 'taken')

Good news about the WW1 Germans I may have to add some to next order, I was thinking of using the WW1 Austrians in caps as non-elite Chinese type troops but it looks like I'll have to come up with another cunning plan  :).

Okay, I've had another thought on this and found a couple of pictures, unfortunately they're in a book (remember those?) and not on the internet so I can't send a link.

Figure one.
Almost a copy of a 1917-18 German Stormtrooper. Uniform is a green-khaki colour. Equipment looks like brown leather with a light-ish grey snap-sack and puttees, shoes are a very light grey and appear to be made out of canvas.

Figure Two.
This is like the first but he's wearing a cap and his uniform is dark blue-grey (actually more blue than grey). His equipment looks like cloth in a khaki colour. Puttees are the same colour as his uniform.

Both figures are equipped with what looks like Mauser rifles or '03 Springfields.

You might be able to do something with the WWII Japanese as some of them have caps. Also it might be worth considering WWI US troops because apart from the lack of a cap they could be used for 'Figure Two'.

I've also seen pictures of Chinese officers crawling all over a Vickers 6 Tonner (the one with the 47mm gun) they looked rather Japanese to my eyes.

A last comment on the colours I've quoted, they are probably off. The book I'm using isn't too hot on colours for the more modern periods.

Oh! Just had a look at my 'Uniforms of the World' originally printed in 1937. Only some small line pictures here, but one figure posted as 'Guard Infantry 1931' looks very muck like a British 1914 infantry man right down to the webbing equipment!!

Hi Grumpy,
if you have a look at the Osprey website (linked below), you will see some pics from their books, which should be of use. Also if you have a look at the preview via Amazon, you often get more images than are shown. At the bottom are links to their two other books in the 'series' that have plenty of info. Hope this helps?

Sorry Vic, was on leave on a remote Scottish "isle" - the famous image of the Chinese in the glasses- Andrew Mollo Army uniforms of World War 2 ,(London, 1973) p.163, illustration 111. Mollo who is quite diligent in his research depicts the figure in a light desert tone khaki and explains that "between 1937 and 45, two distinct colours of uniform were worn. In summer various shades of khaki cotton and wadded winter uniforms of a bright blue cotton" (p.20).

So your colour depends on the season.  Hope this is useful

Hello All

Sorry for the long time between replies but it's getting to the end of our winter sport season here so I'm driving around the country providing support for my boys in the various sports.

Thanks for the pointers on uniforms and I've got a lot of information already on their appearance. I was mainly wanting to pick some brains on possible proxies within the Pendraken stables.

I've found a picture of the WW1 Germans and it looks like they are semi-puttee-ed (?):-

Are the WW2 Romanians puttee-ed?

The ubiquitous WW1 American cavalry look like they may get a run with head swaps

It's fortunate that the Chinese used a lot of German kit, 222, Pz 1, etc
