Can I place a request for a "generic" armoured train. I understand that this is quite a specialised item, but perhaps by making in fairly generic it can work for any period from 1914 to the second world war, and any nation. 

Armoured Steam Loco and tender
Armoured Carriage with position each end to add a suitable tank turret
Armoured Carriage with Naval type Gun turret one end and AA position the other.
Flat car that could take tanks, guns or AA guns

Perhaps it could be constructed in such a way that the gun positions are swapable. Also make it to fit with N Guage rolling stock.  The slight disparty in scale with your vehicles or the tank turrets will not matter

Use N Guague "flexitrack" it does not have connectors on the end but is only about £3 a metre length.  It can be cut with a Junior Hack saw and bends to form curves. Points are the expensivbe bit.

For civilian trains look on Ebay for rolling stock and there are a number of die cast Del Prado trains that are suitable.

Or go to your local model railway exhibition and buy second-hand track for a couple of quid.

Not sure on trains, as they tend be high cost / low sale items usually.  The ones in the Boer range sell almost never, so it's put us off a little.  Saying that though, Dave's mentioned some train mounted artillery for the WW1 revamp, so we'll see how they go.

It's probably about the same to be honest.  Resin is cheaper to produce, and lighter to send out, but it's more labour intensive and needs constant remoulding.  Metal is heavy and costs more, but the moulds last for ages and they're easier to spin off.

There's a section on Rail at http://www.o5m6.de/ "Engines of the Red Army" - it covers all types of "engines of war" rather than just railway engines. If you haven't seen it before it has some very nice illustrations of soviet equipment both home-grown and lease-lend.

The 0-4-0 armoured train looks pretty boxy and not much of the engine underneath is discernible.  I'm wondering if the Boer War one might be close enough to pass muster - "in the dusk with the light behind it" so to speak. i.e paint it green, slap on a couple of red stars and a couple of red flags at the front and swear blind it's the genuine article. I'm thinking of it as an objective more than a fighting element so it just needs to sit in a siding looking believable.

Clearly not an exact replica but close enough if I want to represent a generic armoured train I reckon.

Engine, tender and a couple of suitably doctored carriages would make a passable imitation of the Russian armoured train shown on the site I linked.

I have looked at the Boer one, I think the tender and loco would be just about ok. THe flat cars are fine, but you really need more modern artillery cars.

Getting WW1 armoured train stuff is hard. I did find a paper one for the Czech legion in 1/250. http://prmodels.webnode.cz/products/armoured-train-orlik-1-250-made-by-rawen/

I was looking through some old magazines last night and found an old Military Modelling from 1983 It has part one  ( sadly I dont have part 2) of polish armoured trains of late ww1 and the inter war years...has some plans etc of them ..I  can scan the magazine if anyone wants a look
