Fine mesh the sort you get for repairing car body work , cut into strips then twisted tight..its still quite sharp after that though
If I were creating Pendraken I wouldn't mess about with Romans and  Mongols  I would have started with Centurions , eight o'clock, Day One!

 hell .. you're a genius!!  8)

I have also another problem: that the trenches.. (in fact they were tight a meter)
here .. how would you solve it?

Hertsblue

The only way to really replicate narrow trenches is to build them with the figures in situ. This means chopping figures in half to populate the trenches. Then you can swap "full" and "empty" trench sections in and out as required. Otherwise you're back to the time-honoured fudge of only having the front wall of the trench with an "L" section that you can place your figures behind.
When you realise we're all mad, life makes a lot more sense.

I  agree with Hertsblue, its the bases that get in the way...unless you want the trench to be a base depth in size or slightly large or its harder to get the figures out ( experience talking here)..Luckily with Pendraken prices being reasonable its a cost effective way of making it look nice with permanent trench troops

thanks moocifer!

@Hertsblue and Fenton
The idea of the "trench base" is very interesting .. :-\

In fact you gave me a good idea about: to represent the battlefield entrenched with the "base trench", using only the bases of the troops in the assaults to represent the soldiers in the open field ..
It might be a good idea  :)

I'll have to make another order to Leon infantry to be sacrificed as a "half soldier" ..
