I know this has been discussed before, but are they seriously doing this?

30 £ /40 £ for 10 plastic models? thats more than a pendraken army pack and i bet the whole box would weigh even less. Now the other "deals" were ridicoulous, but this one??

I just noticed and i was stunned a bit. hell a regiment box of 20 used to cost 10 less than this.

They are even asking 8£ for a transfer sheet...

Not quite the bargains they used to be.

RTB01, their first box of plastic Space Marines (released in 1998)  had thirty plastic figures for £9.995.  http://www.solegends.com/citrt/rtb01marines.htm

PBS5 Skeleton Army, had at twenty Skeleton infantry, ten horsemen and a chariot for £12.95.  http://www.solegends.com/citboxes/skeletonarmy.htm

Today my friend said that he has paid over 30 dollars, and his tomb kings army is not even close to completion, yet with about 35 dollars, I got an entire 24 AP pendraken army!  I think he is now going to play 10mm.

We ought to have a 'sweep' and see who can get the closest to the next price increase ! ;)
I'll go for something of similar size and 'importance' (to an army) of that Nurgle (?) monster that B linked to, jumping to 25 Euros soon.

No, they are very serious about these prices. In fact they feel their merchandise is highly undervalued and as such prices will rise beyond all inflation (with the exception of Zimbabwe perhaps) citing the rise in prices for resources (which have actually considerably dropped in recent years), the government (fair enough they deserve to be blamed anyways, yet are to be found "not guilty" whatever GW claims this time), the man in the moon (he is really baaaaad) and look over there a three-headed squirrel....

Phil seems to be at the stage where he is taking entertainment from this, attempting to guess the next price hike. You will go there once you have realised your anger does not concern GW in the least. It is the first time I can say I have progressed further than Phil as I am now in the stage where GW is totally indifferent to me. What do they have that I could use in my hobby? I mean things which I can not get cheaper and/or better from another manufacturer?

Maybe, and that is just a wild guess, GW only cares about two figures in their balance sheet, sales and EBITDA. In that case my strategy of not buying anything witht he Aquila on it will certainly not help improving these numbers. But then again it is up to the company to please me, not the other way round.

Just an idea of mine...

Cheers

I think you've hit the nail on the head there Roland.....I have to admit I don't really care about GW any more, at all.
I'm simply astounded at the prices, and that they can still apparently sell their stuff at those prices.

Eventually, I'm sure it will help all of the smaller gaming companies as more and more folk DO turn away from GW*....So from that point of view, the more they whack the prices up, the more I giggle, and shake my head in disbelief. ;)

*Lets face it....They are turning away, perhaps not in sufficient numbers yet.... There HAS to be a 'tipping point' when they realize they're actually losing out 'big time'......But it seems to have been going on for such an age now....You begin to wonder if it WILL ever happen. ;D ;D
While some folk will continue to reach down into what must be VERY deep pockets, I'm sure GW will keep increasing their prices.

Hear hear!

Exactly the case Phil. The "tipping point" will come AND (putting recently acquired knowledge to good use) the decline comes "suddenly" and fast!

Downfalls are always a surprise to those falling but as you chimed in: Are we bothered?

I must say I am concerned should GW fail, just plainly because a lot of future gamers will not materialise. Not that the hobby itself will diminish, no but it will certainly not have the widespread. The more the merrier can be the case but also a reduced exposure could help the gaming to become better and more focussed?

Well, maybe it is a good thing to keep these pleasures among gentlemen?  :-\ (not that I YET count myself in such an illustre club)

Time will tell and as long as we duely send our pay to Leon and Dave what do we miss?

Unfortunately I don't think that they will hit the "tipping point" at least not for a long while.

1 Most GW stuff is bought directly or indirectly by parents of boys in thier young teens.  These parents have no idea on what wargames figures and paraphanalia cost.  Even  If it seems expensive they often do not know of other companies to compare it with.

2 GW makes a big thing about painting it with the right colours so even if the parents are aware of Coat D'arms little Johnny will still want the Citadel puke orange rather than the exact same shade from Coat D'arms.

3 Parents will compare the cost of say the "Island of Blood Started set at £61 for 70 Minis, Rule book , Dice etc . With the  the latest Xbox game on Johnnys birthday list at £45.

4 They see the Warhammer set as constructive and educational and gets Johhny off his Xbox for a while.

5 Even at £40 for 10 figures this is still cheaper than the Xbox game, Probably takes Johnny longer to get them assembled and painted than it would to get through 25 levels of Killing Carniverous Zombies and seems less violent than the box game

6 Add the "Free" Childminding :d (sorry Gaming) at the GW store that Johnny can take his new toys too and as a parent you have a winner that seems cheap.

As a Parent I would try and guide my child to Historical stuff but If GW was what they really wanted as all thier mates were into it, I would probably get them GW stuff.

Well Orci a few problems there:

1. Gaming is now starting to be banned (already in effect in many German GW stores). Come, buy. leave or we kick you out.

2. Maybe little Johnny's parents will do so once but when Johnny complains "it is too much work" and is a fgeneral nuisance they will switch back to Videogames.

The tipping point, as you put it is not now and no one knows when exactly it will be. Lets rather say AFTER the sh.t went downhill we can look back and say when. Inevitably though, managmenet has set up this company for failure.

3. More and more parents are aware of something called the internet. Assuming PC literacy at the levels Phil claims he possesses it will take them five minute or less to find the proper sources of information. Now parents will, if really determined to establish a hobby, engage with the offspring and the offspring will use and game what the originator uses.

Example from real life is my daughter. I have yet to completely convince her of the evilness of said company -she still likes Eldar to my eternal regret- ut she now uses cheap brushes because "they feel better" and artist paints from the artist shop because "much cheaper and I use less". Although her painting style is still, shall we say, expressionistic, she is looking at "miniatures" as she calls them from a non-GW perspective. Btw, she hopefully will be pictured wearing "the helmet" tomorrow.  :D

Too bad I have no mustache at the moment to go with it  :-\ :d

My biggest nuisance out of all this, is that the quality items they have at a good price are starting to be wiped out of their catalog. It's been twice this year now that i have missed out on something i still wanted from their range.

I went looking for the battlemat, it was gone.
I wanted to pick up an epic flyer to finish of the collection, they have now killed the range. It seems to me that the specialist range, who could keep some of their veteran players like me quasi -satisfied (more challenging rulesets or grander scale), is being traded in for cash cows who just want someone to make one or two purchases and then move on to the next one.

Best part out of all this is, now that those items are gone, i no longer need anything from them anymore. I was going to pick up a copy of bloodbowl, but i don't know if i want to do that now, seeing they won't support it anyway, and will no longer sell the miniatures...

But seeing as the larger battles of epic 40k were always my favourite ones, i'm quite happy to be at home in 10 mm now.  :D

When my kids are older I will quite happily shell out this sort of money for gw minis if that is what they wanted. I'd rather engage with  my son over a game of 40k rather than watch him play video games.
My daughter had a barbie house for xmas which cost me £95 quid which is a cheap piece of plastic sh*t. GW products are a bargain in comparison.
