GW rant

I reckon I've made my last trip to games workshop, went in today with a list of 12 paints I needed and as per usual I was hit with a barrage of aggresive amateur sales techniques which bore no relation to what I actually wanted.
I say I need a pot of matt varnish and out comes a giant spray can of satin varnish with the timeless phrase 'you'll need this then', I say I need a blue wash and I'm directed to a trio of purples Which again I'm told are what I need to achieve the glazed hue I'm after!!!???
I tell the 'salesman' I need a substitute for bad moon yellow and I'm offered a base yellow, a yellow wash and a highlight. (of course I do, what do I know?)

Anyway, I took 3 of the paints I needed (only because I had an immediate use for them) and put them on the counter and said 'I'll just take these', but NO, I'm then told I should have a seat by the tables and see how some kid (no more than 13) uses the purples for that glazed hue which I never even hinted that I had a need for. :-q

Needless to say, a firm no brought the salesman back to his senses and he allowed me to make my less than I wanted purchase and leave.

So what is the deal with GW shops and their pushing unwanted products on customers?, do they really think it endears us to them and their brand?, it's patronising bordering on insulting to assume I don't know what I want and now I've had enough of GW, I won't be going there again (great sales work then).

I'll be ordering the colours I need from the vallejos Pendraken stock from now on, at least then I know I'll get what I need.

I believe that the Cote d' Arms range of paints is the original GW (now theres 2 words that I never thought I'd string together) range of paints, they come in the original flip-top 18ml pots that GW used to sell, the ones with the hinge that lasted about 10 openings, but on the plus side they never seem to dry out, I'm still using some pots that I bought 12 years ago.

I only ever go into the Boro one every now and then, more to see what they're up to than anything else.  Every visit brings the same 'Have you gamed before, come and have a look at this, we do this as a starter set for £200', etc.  I've tried to start conversations previously about things outside GW, and have also mentioned Pendraken, but it's like you're speaking a foreign language to them.

I'll be going in again soon to see if they'll accept some Smoggycon flyers.   :-\

Leon,Just watch they don't make you buy a realm of battle game board in return...

The worse one I had was the "you look like a Wardancer so you must be an Elf player", or words to that effect =). These days I pop in just when the store opens and hardly get bothered. Luckily the store manager has been there for years and is in his 30s and not a complete nob! Strange but true :o ;).

 :D

First mistake: "I went into GW."  :P

Second mistake: "Buying the GW colours I need."  =)

I recomend asking Leon here for some Vallejo Model Color, if you need a conversion chart PM me (Contains both Vallejo Ranges old old, old and new GW Range, CdA, Reaper and P3). Also buy brushes here and not GWs brushes (= the crap Winston and Newton consider throwing in the bin).

All in all GW is quite desperate to make sales (price increase 15 %, sales increase 1 % - nuff said!) .

@Leon maybe you can teach them YOUR sales technique  :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\  ;D :D

Fenton

The Belfast store has a female staff member! real rabid GW fanboy fanperson
If I were creating Pendraken I wouldn't mess about with Romans and  Mongols  I would have started with Centurions , eight o'clock, Day One!

In Edinburgh GW they even employ a female...not that it attracts any female players OR could all the 13 year old do anything worthwhile with the lady (not that she is capable herself but hey you never know)

Maybe a Totty  :-\ Nik your department)

Yes and no. I also have the brand new GW range equivalents for all the poor souls who mistakenly bought them :P

I have to say that I've never had these
experiences in the Stoke shop. Other than
an enquiry as to what I'm painting I've
never had an issue.

Seems like I've got off lightly.

Yeah, I saw the original online and wanted to knock up something similar, so Matt copied a lot of it over.  I'm not sure how accurate a lot of it is now, with the change of the GW's, and some of the other paints not being in widespread use anymore.

I stopped buying paints there for the same reason, over zealous sales staff trying to sell me Beelzebubs younger brother armed with lazer cannons for £800.00p. Wow Got me too feel embarressed for the guy, so never ventured there again. now i'm going to listen to a cd of whale noises in the corner of a darkened room (Not that the visit scarred me or anything) I just like whales ;)
Hve a great week everyone
