Hi 2Australia.

Further to my last reply, I've been experimenting with Neil Thomas' "Ancient and Medieval Wargaming".  Needs some tweaking but overall not a bad game.  Tried it at home a couple of times and at my club.  Seems to have aroused some interest.

I like them because they're only about 5 pages long and I CAN ACTUALLY FOLLOW THEM AND UNDERSTAND THEM!!!!!  Which for me is unusual!

He goes through each period (Biblical, Classical, Imperial and medieval) with the basic rules, adaptions for each period, a background to the period and an example game using the rules.  There's also a suggested army for each nationality.  Some people may be put off by this as he advocates using just EIGHT elements per side per game from a suggestion list of about 12 - although I've used them successfully with about 14 units a side - with twice as many still to come when I've finished painting them!

There's also a forum - think it's on Yahoo - dedicated to these rules with updates and suggestions and, in my view, improvements to the rules.

Overall, a simple, quite bloody, fairly quick and quite enjoyable game.  Hope that'll be useful in your search
