Last year we had a massive 320 entries, so having another competition for 2013 was always guaranteed!  This year we hope it will be even bigger and better, with more entries and more prizes!

As always, the competition will be running throughout February, with the closing deadline being at midnight on Thurs 28th Feb.  That gives everyone loads of time to get their orders in and get their entries painted up!

One big change for this year is the allowance of more than one image per entry, which is increased to 2.  This is to help out those folk who don't have professional images of their figures, as you can now enter a couple of pictures to give the judges a better view of your entry.

This year the 7 categories will remain the same. with only a few tweaks here and there.  We've included the amount of foot and cavalry allowed per base, to allow a bit more scope for your entries there.  The size of the Open - Single Base category has increased as well, allowing anything up to a 100x100mm size base/diorama to be entered.  Finally, the second Open category is now classed as 'Army' and can include both figures and scenery, so we're looking for some impressive setups in this one.

Categories:

Foot - Pre-20th C. - Min: 3 / Max: 16 figures on a single base, and pre-1900.
Foot - 20th C. - Min: 3 / Max: 16 figures on a single base.
Mounted - Min: 3 / Max: 10 figures on a single base.
Vehicle - Single vehicle on or off base.
Fantasy & Sci-Fi - Anything Fantasy or Sci-Fi oriented, maximum base size of 60x60mm.
Open - Single Base - Anything which doesn't fit into the other categories, with a max base size of 100x100mm.
Open - Army! - Armies, Dungeons, whole table setups, anything!

If you're unsure which category to put your entry in, let us know what it is, and we'll point you in the right direction!

Rules

- Firstly, all figures must be Pendraken.  Conversions are allowed, but only on our figures.

- You must be a Forum member to enter, but other than that, everyone is welcome!

- You may enter as many times as you like but each entry is only allowed 2 images (except for the 'Army!' category, see below).  You can also combine several shots into a montage if you wish, but still limited to two overall images.  If you have any difficulty posting pics, they can be emailed to Pendraken and we'll put them up for you.  We'll also be linking some good photo tutorials closer to the start date.

- The 'Open - Army!' category may have 5 photo's, as it's difficult to cover a whole army with just a single photo!  You can also still put several images together into a montage if you would prefer that.

- All entries must be your own work, and have not been entered into any online competitions before.

- Entries should have been completed in the last 12 months.

- You can post WIP photo's if you wish, and you can also post extra photo's of your work elsewhere on the Forum.  These will not count towards your competition entry.

- The winners will be decided by a team of judges (to be announced very soon!).  Entries will be judged on the painting first and foremost, but remember that effective basing can make a nice entry look even better.

- Competition threads will be created on the opening date, purely for your entries.

- Pendraken may use your pics in future promo/marketing, catalogue covers or web pics.  Entering gives your permission for your pics to be used.

This year we've got a huge amount of prizes lined up, both from Pendraken and others from some very generous companies, and we'll be announcing those in the next week, so keep an eye out for that!  Remember, the opening day for entries is 1st Feb, which gives you just enough time to get any figures ordered, grab your brushes and get busy!  We've seen some great work displayed on the Forum over the past 12 months, so we're hoping to see some of it making an appearance in the Competition!

Definitely need the the photo tutorials as my work with a camera is rubbish! Does the scenery have to be Pendraken? i.e Timecast.

Coincidentally, Timecast are sponsoring one of the categories, so using their bulidings in the 'Army!' category will be fine this year!

How about 100% sculpted 10mm models. As in, if I sculpted (as I'm getting better) using one of the Pendraken Dollys and painted them.

(This could be time to get on with my 10mm war hammer Fant and my Anglo-Zulu wars stuff!)

I'd also be interested in the answer to this.

Also you say that Pendraken figures can be used if converted, how about converted vehicles - I've converted a 1920's/30's truck into a bus and would like to use it in the single base category.

Cheers

Hi,

If it is not too late, how about considering adding a category for a war games unit? At the moment, you have categories for a single stand and whole armies, which leaves single units such as for Black Powder, Lasalle, Warmaster etc. hanging a bit in the air. Just a thought.

Don't think so Gavin....Unless I'm missing something in the rules above. :-\

I would have thought we could paint them or at least finish them starting from now. I would be a tad miffed if people just wiped dust of models they painted long ago and put them in, especially as you can enter as many as you like. Otherwise I could just photograph my hole collection?

42 isn't that the open section?

Grumpy, surly a converted vehicles is fine?

As far as my request, I wasn't expecting extra credits for the sculpt (as its a painting opportunity) just the option to do one of my own.

Leon, you sure it shouldn't be one entry per person? I have 0 experience in this,  but won't people just pile things in?

Finally, what about 10mm skirmish type basing? For example a squad of 10, 10mm, Pre 20c all on 1cm circular/square/hex bases?

There has never been a requirement that they are painted in the Feb of the comp. it would be a bit hard to paint a whole army in a month.

While you can enter lots of entries in the same category, this is probably self defeating, as at best  you are likely to split the judges votes. If you can't choose your best minis how will the judges do so? Winners in the past haven't been the people who spammed a category with lots of photos.

Single based figures are a bit of a problem - they don't really fit in any of the categories, I have had problems with this in the past.

This is the 3rd or 4th time Leon has run the painting comp and the rules have worked pretty well in the past.

Well it seems a bit bloody stupid to me that you can enter something painted yonks ago, seems to defeat the purpose but fine. I'll enter stuff I painted last year, saves me painting anything now.

Think Leon may have accidently, in his flu induced fever, missed a caviet
Last year the cut off was:
a) Nothing that has been entered in previous competitions here.
b) Has to have been painted since last year...

Well, that's what I'll be sticking too myself, although last year I only entered stuff I painted in February!!!!  ;D

I'd echo Forbes's thoughts here really - in the past two competitions, in which I've had the honour of being a judge, these rules have been fine: there is no stipulation to have painted an entry recently, only that it has not been in any online comp previously; in my experience, most people's painting improves over time - with experience and the use of newly-learned techniques - and so most people will choose something recent anyway.

Multiple entries into single categories from the same person will, as Forbes notes, make it harder to pick one...and runs the risk of 'flooding' - which can be a distraction and move attention elsewhere; as a judge, I am looking to award my votes to separate entries for places in categories...not one individual.

Also - and this is important to me at least - in the spirit of Pendraken and this wonderful forum, I'll be more excited by entries that I haven't seen before rather than just another pic of something I've already appreciated. So...if you are going to enter stuff you've already painted & posted here, I'd encourage you to take new pics of it - on-table perhaps, or from a different angle etc. Similarly, I love to see entries from new ranges as that seems to me to be in the spirit of an annual competition somehow.

I'd also encourage my fellow forumites to remember that this is a competition that is free to enter, designed to be fun, designed to be an encouragement for everyone to take part and an incentive to get painting, and that the spirit of this is that it should be an opportunity to recognise everyone's efforts - and delight in the quality that is shared.

It's also a chance for more people to come and play with us here - in the past couple of years we have had entrants who came initially for the competition - and have stayed; this is clearly a good thing - more 10mm converts!
