Happy New Year to All!

As last year's painting diary was successful http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,4379.0.html with 183 posts and nearly 8000 views, I thought a new thread for this year would good.

The cliff hanger ending from last year, was to flock or not flock the ramparts of the Roman Fort? How could you sleep waiting for the answer? Well I've been at the in-laws today so no painting progress, but I think I will go with Phil's suggest of a bit of flock. Which has the advantage, that if it doesn't look good a bit more can easily be added!

One of my aims this year is to be more consistent in maintaining this diary - as last year there was a bunch of painting that only got recorded post fact. Its easy to take a couple of quick photos and upload them, so I will aim to do this.

Painting wise, I'm not sure what my main target should be, the likely contenders are:

  • Finish Araby Army
  • Late Romans
  • Lizardmen
  • German Paras

Short term, the Roman Fort, a few artillery units and treents for KoW are in progress.

If it's a marching fort, Fred, then it would be recently thrown up with fresh earth. If it's a legionary base then it would have stone walls and be well established i.e. grassed over.

Just a thought.  :-\
When you realise we're all mad, life makes a lot more sense.

Roman Fort

Flocked the lower parts of the ramparts - went for just a touch on the outer walls, and a bit more (around 1cm) on the inside. I'm thinking of this as a fairly new fort, that the ramparts are being maintained. Bit of light dry brushing done as well.

Even with Romans in the photo!

I think this half of the fort is pretty much done, just needs a spray of dullcote, and some felt sticking to the bottom to stop it sliding.

Asked Steve Oats about flocking the fort ramparts last night - aswnser is yes and no. The fort is a marching fort but semi-permanent. The earth rampart would ahve had tufr cover to stabalise it, which over time would die, and the reseed, so a basic green cover with tufts.

Fred - Steve probably wouldn't answer, he never checks SPAM. He also rarely updates his web site - so there are 10mm Carolinians on there no one knows about (Leon is now going to bar me.)

Ian, yes the Baggage Train website could do with some updating, I only got the Roman Fort after seeing it at a show, as I couldn't really picture what it would be like from the website, and its a fair price for enough pieces to make a fort.

Friday Game
Played a 2 player, 4k a side game of KoW in 10mm. Playing distances as written in the rules, but with Warmaster sized units (which is about half the 28mm frontage) the game plays really well, even though the rules are very simple. 2 of the players were only on their second game, and 1 on his first, and we finished within 3 hours, with the Elves destroying the Mordor hordes.

Painting
Inspired by KoW I have been adding various bits to my forces - mainly big shooty bits as can be seen from the photo

Lots of Kallistra and GW stuff (sorry!) but a few bits of Pendraken, the blue headed things on artillery carriages are scratch built Dragons Head war engines, using Pendraken artillery carriages (and there are a couple of PD elves just behind them. The catapults and trebuchets are Kallistra. The really big treemen are Kallistra - these are huge about 5cm tall. Then there are Empire and Dwarf cannons at the front. The romans on the right are Pendraken to give an idea of the size of some of the tree creatures.

Terrific stuff as usual Fred. 8)
It'll probably sound a daft thing to say, but I just 'lurve' the shade of blue you've used.
What would be a good word to describe it ?.....Vibrant ? :-bd
Cheers - Phil

FierceKitty

Those Romans must be nervous. They weren't too happy about fighting in forests, following their experience in Germany, so mobile and militarised trees would be very unsettling.
Do any commercial rules systems still refer to "morale tests"?
I don't drink coffee to wake up. I wake up to drink coffee.

fred.

The trees may be the least of the Roman's worries.

I'm not sure that I've seen Morale Tests in those terms recently. But something similar exists in Hail Caesar and Kings of War (Break and ?Nerve tests respectively)

Phil, the blue is Vallejo Magic Blue from their Game Colour range - its pretty vibrant normally, and yesterday it was rather thin, so came out particularly shiney and bright (they aren't finished yet).
