Is there any defence against that dirty trick at string quartets of putting the Mozart or Haydn first, and the Beethoven, Schubert, or Dvorak third, and then sticking in some atonal horror or local mediocrity in the middle so you can't escape it by arriving late or leaving early?
(I am aware that there are Bohemian accents missing over the last name cited; blame my typewriter)

Yeah, they're fond of doing that at the Albert Hall Proms. I like to register disapproval by not applauding. Doesn't make a great deal of difference but it makes me feel better.   >:(

There is no defence. I feel your pain. But many others don't, apparently.

Fierce (if I may call you that?),

You surprise me, Sir!  I have always been eternally grateful to the programmers for inserting rubbish in the middle of a concert in order to cover the gentle buzz of my snoring as I take the required mid-performance power nap. I awake refreshed and attentive in time for the grand finale!  Doesn't everybody?   ;) :-\

There usually aren't any quiet passages amongst the clacking and bleating of this so-called "music".  =)
