Right chaps,
Sorting out my next order and I'm running low on artillery, the Hessian division fought at Mars-La-Tours and St Privat/Razonville with IX Corps, but sources I have are contradictory.

Ospery Men-At-Arms 422, German Allies (1870-71), lists the artillery in 25th Cav Bde as Horse Bty; Fd Btys, then Corps Artillery as 2nd FT Unit, Schleswig-Holstein FA R No.9 2nd Horse Bty, Schleswig-Holstein FA R No.9.
It further goes on to say they fielded 2 heavy batteries (6-pdrs), three light batteries and one horse battery (4-pounders).

Ascoli only talks about Brigade strengths.

Quintin Barry (The Franco-Prussian War 1870-71) Volume 1 The Campaign of Sedan says the Hessians have 5 x 4 pounder batteries 2 x 6 pounder batteries 1 x 4 pounder horse artillery battery...

I tend to favour Barry, but can anyone tell me different?

Have you looked at the OOBs in Bruce Weigle's 1870? Should find it there.

Lemmey,

I am a bit weak on this, as I think, is Bruce in 1870. His OOB does not distinguish between Prussian and Hessian batteries. The German General Staff History says the following:  1st and 2nd Heavy Batteries, 1st, 2nd, 3rd Light Batteries  all in an "Abtheilung" under Major von Herget.  Horse artillery battery under Captain Freiherr von Schaffer-Bernstein with the 25th cavalry brigade.  So a total of six batteries of 36 guns.

Volley & Bayonet site (http://www.vonsteinmetz.supanet.com/subpages/vnb/reduced-gsp2.html) gives them:
Divisional troops
1st , 2nd +3rd Light Batteries, Hessian Field Art Regt 6 [ ] [ ] [ ] AR-F
1st +2nd Heavy Batteries, Hessian Field Art Regt 6 [ ] [ ] AR-Hv
Horse Artillery Battery, Hessian Field Art Regt 6 [ ] AR-F

Which again looks positive.

My much-battered copy of "The Franco-German War 1870-1871" Part 1, Volume 2 (which seems to be a translation of the German Official Account) gives a total of 36 guns present with the Grand Ducal Hessian Division.
When you realise we're all mad, life makes a lot more sense.

Barrie Lovell from Timecast has come up trumps.

"Hi Will

It seems that the 25th Divisional Artillery was from the Hessian Artillery. I have checked various sources and it this case von Moltke's account is probably the correct one (and Weigle seems to have used that one as well).

According to Moltke the Hessian division had 5 foot batteries (2 x 6pdr, 3 x 4 pdr) and one Horse battery (4 pdr). This also confirmed by Nafziger - see below:

Grossherzoglich Hessische (25th) Division:
Generallieutenant von Ludwig Prinz von Hessen
49th Brigade: Generalmajor von Wittich
lst (Leibgarde) Infantry Regiment (2)
2nd (Grossherzog) Infantry Regiment (2)
lst (Guard) Jäger Battalion (l)
50th Brigade: Oberst von Lyncker
3rd Infantry Regiment (2)
4th Infantry Regiment (2)
2nd Jäger Battalion (l)
25th Cavalry Brigade: Generalmajor Freiherr von
Schlotheim
lst Reiter Regiment (Garde Chevauxlegers) (4)
2nd Reiter Regiment (Leib-Chevauxlegers) (4)
8
Hessian Horse Battery (6 guns)
Artillery:
Foot Batallion Hessian Field Artillery
lst Heavy Foot Battery (6 guns)
2nd Heavy Foot Battery (6 guns)
lst Light Foot Battery (6 guns)
2nd Light Foot Battery (6 guns)
3rd Light Foot Battery (6 guns)
2nd Field Pionier Company
2nd Sanitary Detachment

Note that this was all the artillery in the Hessian army. The 9th Corps Artillery reserve was from the Schleswig-Holstein artillery.

Hope this helps

Barrie

PS I hope you will have a single figure digging a latrine to represent the 2nd Sanitary Detachment."

Lemmey,

Unsurprisingly, Moltke seems to agree in its entirety with the General Staff History - who'd have thought it???!  :o :o

It was obviously a good day for the scribes!  :P  ;D

I now have more than two sources that agree, happy to get on with the Division now (time to match flags to units).

Oh hecky flip!
6 sources plus the interweb checked tonight...
Hessians wore the M1860 rather than M1867 helmet helmet with their own unique crest on the front.
I know they were probably mixed (and they didn't wear them in 1866 to 'avoid confussion').
