Hi,

As I am planning to buy a pile of lead for this at the bash I was wondering what rules people are using for this? Given the smaller nature of some of the battles I'd contemplated 'There Are Your Guns', the General de Brigade based set. I've also had 1859 recommended. I also know there are a few free sets out there.

So, just trying to get an idea on the pros and cons? And any other suggestions

This is also a period that I'm very interested in. I picked up the Weaver and Svendsen books and plan a purchase of figures soon. As for rules, I am leaning towards Neil Thomas 19th Century Wargaming rules or Field of Battle. Both use four bases per unit, although the # of figures per base doesn't matter. The Thomas' rules have a specific section and army lists dealing with both Schleswig Wars. The rules are fairly simple, but the approach and design philosophy seem well thought out and even explained in the book.

I've got that book as well but haven't looked at the rules in detail. I like the idea of four stand units as it represent the 4 coy / 4 sqn units quite well. Not sure on base sizes, skirmishers etc. Might need to play around with some figures.

I don't really know Field of Battle. What scales/ratios etc. do they use?

Have just bought Neil Thomas' book, Wargaming Nineteenth Century Europe 1815-1878. What an excellent read, and very snappy set of rules plus variable army lists for all the major conflicts. The armies needed are small (10 units) so the opportunity to try out a number of conflicts is high.

Yep, me too, Mr T's rules are ideal for 10mm and the Dining Room Table. Job Jobbed.

I've got There Are Your Guns and Field of Battle on their way as well and will trying the Thomas rules. Plenty of options..

Though to be honest, if past performance is anything to go by, it's not like I'll ever get time to actually PLAY a game with the figures once I've painted then...

Have to be honest, I've got There are your guns and I don't really see where they're coming from. The armies are very big and some cavalry regiments are enormous, and there are lots of little fiddly order thingies to cut out which make the table look a mess. Not for me. Field of Battle II on the other hand, excellent!
