Hi Guys.
Anyone else having problems with links to sites timing out on a frequent basis at the moment ?
Seems to have coincided with a 'boost' in the broadband speed over here in deepest darkest Wales.
Can't, in truth, tell the difference between 4.2 and 7.6 Mb/s....but the number of times I get timed out, is getting to be a right pain in the posterior at the moment....
ESPECIALLY when I go to check the posts here that have been put up since my  previous visit..... :-t.....Loose them all for nice easy checking.
Any ideas ?....Is it likely to be Orange, Google or Firefox ?
Cheers - Mr Grumpy

No problems here, but then I'm in nice civilised Merseyside.  :D

Seriously - maintaince is often done over bank holidays, which will reduce capacity.

You may be right...It just seems to have been going on for a bit longer than I would have expected if that was the case.
Who Knows ?.....I certainly don't ! ;)

Hi as a BT engineer for more years than I care to remember, when an ADSL link is installed or upgraded, the kit at either end will try and optimise the speed of the new line. This involves the kit at either end going through a handshake process.  While this is going on the link drops out for a few seconds. This may well take a few days to settle down.

The other option is the increase in speed is above what the line is really capable of sustaining  and you will continually get drops. In this case you may need to speak to your provider to cap the service at a lower speed.

Hope this helps

Thanks 'Orks'.

Stroll on.....I was a BT engineer, before I went to work for the EE.....In the days where things were held together by string and rubber bands (Strowger).....TXE4, System X and Y were just coming in when I left....I'd be completely lost in a modern exchange.....I don't understand digital technology AT ALL.

But your suggestion of my ISP being 'at fault' is probably the best bet....So thanks for that...It SEEMS to be settling down now...Fingers crossed ;)

Ray.....As I said before, I don't understand digital technology...How an optic fibre carries so much information makes my brain (what's left of it) hurt too much !

Cheers - Phil.

Phil,

I don't understand it either - I just know it's quick.

I must have joined just as you left.  Got trained on Strowger, did a bit on programming System X then went onto X25 ( with 2.4k modems !!!) and then finally onto cisco stuff. I haven't been in an exchange in 20 years either so would probably be lost too.

What i think is most amazing is the speeds we are getting over copper cables. It was not that long ago that we thought 54k was the fastest they could handle.
