I am typing this from work, as this is a work related question.

I have a folder full of files, with Name, First Name, Reference Number as the file name

HORSEMAN, Heedless, AB123
HUSSAR, Last, ZX987

etc.

I have an Excel spreadsheet with this info on.

Is there a way to match the file names against the spreadsheet to see where they differ?

The Spreadsheet is correct - we need to know if there are files missing, or people not on the Spreadsheet that we still have the file for.

There are about 400 lines on the Excel file, and we don't really want to check by hand.

Any ideas?

Sorry but I suspect its a Manual job.

If you don't already have something set up to do this I suspect it would take longer to program than it would to get two people, one reading the file names and one the spreadsheet. The person reading the spreadsheet recites the list, the one checking file names sings out if there's a mismatch.

Sometimes manual procedures are best.

You just need to get a directory*, paste it into a new sheet on the spreadsheet. Remove all the preamble** and do a vlookup to see if you can find it. 


* In file explorer, highlight the files, then right click and select "copy as path"
** e.g.for files in my list "C:\Users\nobby\Downloads\Picture.png" I'd replace "C:\Users\nobby\Downloads\ and the final " to leave Picture.png

Assuming windows, then an alternative is to open a command prompt and use dir>filename.txt, which will create a text file called filename.txt with the current folder filenames in it, which can then be read by excel.

You can navigate to the folder you want using the CD command (e.g. CD desktop takes you to the desktop folder)

There are various options for the dir commannd, which you can see using the dir /? command.

This works with all versions of windows (that I know of)
