Hi, on page 47 the CA example allows a supporting unit to fire twice with response fire to effectively one close assault, albeit with two units. Is this correct?

Big Insect

Yes - that is correct. A supporting unit - whether it is defensive or offensive support can support any number of times. So the example is correct. Each assaulting US unit moves separately and is subject to Vietcong defensive support fire.

A supporting unit can support any number of assaults in a turn, as long as it has visibility to the target.

In the example on Page 47, the US player might have been better off issuing a 'shoot' order to the right-hand US infantry unit to try and suppress the unsuppressed Vietcong unit to its front. That way the other two US units would have been able to assault the target (suppressed) Vietcong unit without fear of receiving support fire that might have caused them to also become suppressed.

Preparation around an assault is critical - the advantage in any assault will fall to the defender, if the attacker has not prepared the assault carefully in advance.

Thankyou, so offensive/opportunity fire is unlimited as well. I had a situation where a single T64 of three fired, added the -1 command dice on the command and assumed the other two couldn't opportunity fire at different targets later in the go?

Big Insect

Opportunity fire is limited - you can only fire once in Opportunity fire (& as you say you then add a -1 to the ordering CV).
However, firing in support of an assault (defending fire or attacking fire) is unlimited. Your supporting units can fire in support of as many assaults as occur in that game turn.

But if you have already supported an assault (in defense) that firing counts as if you have undertaken Opportunity fire.

So, if your T62s are assaulting and support an attacking assault in your turn, in your opponents next turn, they are free to use Opportunity fire, except if they have supported a defensive assault before of attempting Opportunity fire. If that makes sense?
