A trend that Phil (Techno) and I started back in Korea(the range, not the war), was to include a very senior officer.

Does this have a vote for the 1980s Soviets and does anyone have an image you might want the figure based on?

Lord Kermit of Birkenhead

I'll back that, although there may be suitable figures in the WWII range.

Hello Again

You could look at RP1 Senior Officers WW1

or SVX1 the Senior Command set WW2

or for something out of left field how about one of the SCW personalities - https://www.pendraken.co.uk/nscw131-ngeneral-j-yague-hands-in-pockets-3348-p.asp

Leon

I think Sunray's looking for some reference images for our sculptor to work from if possible.  So any pictures of Soviet commanders would be great.
www.pendraken.co.uk - Now home to over 10,000 products, including nearly 5000 items for 10mm wargaming, plus MDF bases, Battlescale buildings, I-94 decals, Litko Gaming Aids, Militia Miniatures, Raiden Miniatures 1/285th aircraft, Red Vectors MDF products, Vallejo paints, Tiny Tin Troops flags and much, much more!

Sunray

Correct Leon.

Option A - we go for a senior field officer (Major etc)- in which case steel helmet

Option B - A staff officer type in tunic and the Soviet SD style cap with exaggerated brim.

We already have sorted the junior officer with AK74 and bins/map case.

And yes- a few images of the type you fancy helps Phil's creativity

Ithoriel

To start the ball rolling ... Marshal Georgy Zhukov .... not sure I fancy painting all those medal ribbons in 10mm though

There are 100 types of people in the world, those who understand binary and those who can work from incomplete data

Sunray

That's the genre all right. Is this a figure 1980s era Soviet wargamers would want?

Big Insect

He might be slight conspicuous on the battlefield - as even at his rank I'd suggest he'd probably be wearing a helmet in combat, and would have ditched the medals.

In real life yes. But this is wargame, and many wargamers LOVE little diaorama style command groups. Airfix included a well sculpted Rommel(Afrika Korps 1962) and we had to wait until 1977 Matchbox when replied with a Monty.Matchbox also did a Rommel! It adds a little drama to the tabletop skirmish when celeb commanders join our modest little fray - does it not?

We are aware this does not feature much in 20Cent conflict. I once did a patrol with a Brigadier and he wore his 58 web and SLR with his red shirt flashes covered in scrim. But its that dichotomy between real life and what gives pleasure to the hobby on the wargame table.

Anyway we have a spare Soviet officer type to design/sculpt and you all have a chance to impact on the strokes of Phil's talented hand and scalpel.

Cast your votes gentlemen.

My vote is that Phil keeps the blade of that scalpel well away from those talented hands ;)

80s? Slightly cooler style for CoS Sergei Akhromeyev (front left)

He had the more formal look too

If you want a more in the field look for a General, Boris Gromov is your man, here leaving Afghanistan

Maybe leave out the bouquet though

Sunray

Many thanks Gwydion.

Methinks we could do a mix and whilst retaining 1980s field uniform simply add the big Soviet SD style cap with exaggerated brim?
No AK74, but Sam Brown/holster and a pair of bins around his neck. Hands behind back as we did in KBR40 pose = very useful senior officer.

Now that would paint up well!
