Not sure the small British army of the 1870s could handle that lot in one go. A continental invasion of Britain (highly unlikely given the strength of the Royal Navy in those days) is a slightly more feasible option.

Yes, taking on the French, Prussian, Austrian and Russians all at the same time is a bit of a stretch.  A French invasion was considered a real possibility in the 1860s and resulted in the building of Palmerston's forts.  So, that might work assuming the France-Prussian war never happened.  A Fashoda-type incident turning into a shooting-war in North Africa is another potential scenario.  Perhaps a Prussian invasion on the lines of The Riddle of the Sands or The Great Game going hot in a Russian invasion of Afghanistan.  The historical what-if scenarios are almost endless but I can't think of one involving the Austrians.

Have to agree. I find I am reading a lot of FPW stuff again, especially as some new books on the subject have emerged recently, eg, Bob Marrion/Stephen Shann's volume 2 on the French army and Helion's latest two volumes on the armies of the Imperial phase and Republican phase. Osprey have also updated their essential history of the FPW and issued it in a smaller, handier version than the original.

Which Pendraken figs would you use for 1870 Brits?


There's Crimean/Indian Mutiny ranges for the mid 1850s, or they then jump to Colonials 1878 onwards.

I know nothing about this period yet, but as someone else said, a Battle of Dorking style invasion of England does intrigue.

I'm not sure there is enough in the Pendraken range to cover all arms (nor am I an expert on British Army uniforms, particularly in this mid Victorian period). To start the ball rolling, how about the Fenian Raids collection? It looks as if this features Canadian Militia(?) which in the 1860s wore 1860s tunics and possibly 1855 shakos. A common cap in British Army in the 1860s was a kind of round forage cap called a "Kilmarnock" so I'm wondering if most of the Gurkha figures from the Indian Mutiny range (obviously excluding the ones brandishing a kukri) might be a good proxy? Unfortunately, I understand the "Home Service" spiked helmet wasn't introduced until 1878 so this would rule out using Prussian figures. 



I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be.

You'll need infantry wearing the 1869 shako.  The Hanoverian figures H1 might do, or those from the Fenian Raids range.  The Prussian Jager and Landwehr from the 1860/1870 range have potential too.  Cavalry are trickier though.  Perhaps some from the Prussian range might work.  Dragoons wore a helmet, hussars and lancers are pretty universal.
