Quite a lot. But a teetotaller on a champagne farm is in the wrong place.

Champagne? Nasty, bubbly, foul tasting stuff. Give me a full-bodied red any day.

I 'liked' Excalibur when it came... but the armour got my goat... I wanted 'historical' dark age... still do. When I viewed it as 'Fantasy'... Fine! Some good visuals... apple blossom... and the eyeball pecking! lol.  8)
A few years later, I rather amazed a young female when I could 'incant' 'The Spell'! Ha! Can't do THAT now... 'mutter, grumble...'  ;D

I thought the whole point of Excalibur was that it was based on Mallory and therefore was given a suitably C15th feel. The most 'historical' King Arthur I've ever come across was the BBC series back in the late 60s or early 70s. I am hopeless with actor names, but Sir Bors went on to make his fortune playing cockney gangsters.

I vaguely remember a 'suitably Dark Age' TV series late 70s, but it was before my first video recorder so unclear. I think there was another series which I did not care  for... I thought that the 'Saxons' looked like they were wearing 'Furry Moonboots'! (Remember Them? Lol! ).
There are a couple of possible 'contenders':
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Legend_of_King_Arthur
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_of_the_Britons

Both may be available from Amazon but one is 'out of stock', so will wait. I imagine that the 'quality' may be poor on modern TVs !

(Just an Aside: But 'Callan' seems to have been sometimes playing on Digital channel 'Talking Pictures' at some silly time in the early hours. I picked up a couple of episodes... from pretty late in the 'run'. Already have all Callan suff on DVD, anyway, but some may be interested in Edward Woodward as the Wargaming Spy!  :) :) :) ).

Don't think either of those two are the series I was thinking of. I was still at school (so pre-1971) and it was the BBC Sunday tea time serial, and it was b/w if memory serves. Of course, I could be wrong. I think it was Ray Winstone who played Sir Bors.

Eh? Are you thinking of Robin of Sherwood? Winstone played Will Scarlet in that?

Winstone was Bors in the King Arthur film with Clive Owen and Kiera.

The only other Arthurian TV show I can think of pre the 1970's would be The Adventures of Sir Lancelot, which I think I've seen being shown on the Talking Pictures channel on Freeview recently.

Yeah, sounds very much like Arthur of the Britons.

Having found a pic of someone in them, I think you're right! Plus 'Excalibur' looks like somebody 'bolted' it together in a garage! Will give a miss!  ;D

It also brought almost 'Pythonesk' blood and gore battle scenes to the major film screen - now much emulated with the 'all the rage' splash it on the camera lens approach, we see now all too often across many Netflix and Prime in-house offerings.

Heh, you watch 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail' and you'd think it's a complete piss-take of 'Excalibur'. And then you realise that it came out six years before . . .

I Really Should rewatch, sometime!

Sound advice for fig painting!  ;)

Most Kids of MY time could quote 'Python' verbatim! For some reason, I have always 'veered' away from 'popular' culture... when 'it happens'... so, although watched and enjoyed, I never 'got into it'!  :o :(

To be continued... (for some reason, I could not add to THIS post ???)
