So bad that, whereas the Bren continues in widespread service around the world and is still its parent nation's main MG, the MG42's near-identical successor the MG3 was effectively withdrawn from frontline service by its parent nation in the 1990s. Or have I got that the wrong way round?

Yep all of those, Fortunately for us Germans had major problems in Normandy where they could not resupply the bunkers with ammo and spare barrels due to the huge amount of suppressive artillery fire. 

Late 17th century French would be my top choice

Deadliest Warrior was produced in the USA, and had a strong element of "USA Can't lose".
