My kids know it bless 'em

Moved house 18 months ago and the house we left was heated by solid fuel Rayburn (FSN grandparents Raeburn must be the Scottish version). Filled the damn thing day and night with coal like a paddle steamer, still freezing in most of the house and I put the damn thing in.
First thing we did in the new house was put oil fired central heating system in.
Shropshire is a lovely place we just 50 years behind everyone else.

It's somewhat of a downer......But we've had worse.

When we lived a few miles outside Newark, we lost the electricity for six days in the middle of a really cold snap.

There had been very heavy snowfall.....which came straight down....So it was able to sit on all the overhead power lines.
Mile upon mile of cables came down.

As we lived in a relatively small village, we were one of the last 'outages' to be reconnected.
Workshop were good, and allowed me to work at home for a few days, so I could muck out the horses in daylight.
Some friends lent us a gas fire, so I could keep warm during the day.......But we survived on soup cooked on a tiny camping gas 'hob'.

The last day we'd were without power, I can remember Von suggesting we go into Southwell to get some fish and chips, for a slightly more substantial meal...and we were just about to go when I noticed the standby light on the VCR had come on. I looked out of one of the windows...and a street light was on.

I went round the whole bungalow switching everything on !!  ;D ;D ;D

Those six days WERE grim.  ;)

Cheers - Phil

Serious tone...

After the insurrection 2 weeks ago, both Serjeants at Arms of the Capitol resigned due to the security failure. Their positions are now held by acting Serjeants at Arms

A couple of days later footage came out of Eugene Goodman, a Capitol Policeman, leading the thugs away from The Senate. In the CCTV he can be seen looking to his left, and, realising how close he is to members of Government, and the target of the insurrection, pushes the chest of guy at the front of the mob. He is a black man, facing down racists.

They chase him as he runs to his right, leading them away from the Chamber, giving his colleagues valuable time to evacuate the Senators.

Today Eugene Goodman was a Deputy Acting Serjeant at Arms, and it was his duty to escort Vice President Harris to the platform.

Well done that man.

Indeed well done that man =D> =D> =D> =D> =D>

When I first saw the video seeing a single black officer repeatedly facing down a large racist mob was incredible
To learn that he had the presence of mind and courage to lead them away from the Senate chamber was inspirational

Hooray.....The boiler's fixed.  :-bd <:-P

It's lovely to put my trainers and socks on one of the 'double' radiators again, so they warm up before I put them on.......Luxury !

Though, compared to the folk that have had their homes flooded, we've not really suffered at all.......Being flooded must be soul destroying. :(

Glad to hear it's fixed Phil (we went without heating at a similar time for 5 days a few years ago) but as you say, there are lots of people in a far worse situation due to the recent flooding :(.

Yep, Flooding had to be the worst, save perhaps loss of everything a fire.

Too frosty and foggy for a nice bike ride this morning, so went for a walk instead. Luckily I barely saw a soul, which was nice, as the dog-walkers obviously decided to have a lie in. Very ethereal in the fog and there was a lovely smell of woodsmoke in the air at one point, followed by a song thrush singing its heart out soon after: both made my morning :).

I've got to walk up the road with wellies on, to check the gee gees, this morning......Couple of inches (plus) of snow down.

No driving the car over to Cardigan for  a 'shop' today.......Just enough white stuff down to make it risky driving the mile down to the village on the little road....I expect the main road from there will probably be clear.

REALLY glad that the boiler got fixed.  :)

Cheers - Phil.

A couple of inches of snow here overnight too Phil, but already a slow thaw is setting in. I still get a childlike thrill at waking to a snow covered landscape, plus the deadening quiet that only snow can bring is lovely. Also the quality of light is just to be savoured :).

Techno II

It's certainly VERY quiet here, Steve. ......I haven't heard a single car drive past Techno Towers this morning.......(Or a tractor.)

I'm basically waiting to see if someone attempts the road this morning, to see how they get on. ;)
From here to the village it's pretty flat for half a mile.....Then there's a quarter of a mile 'uphill'......then a quarter of a mile down hill.

The up and down bit can be a bit of a bugger......I'm not sure if the wee car would cope with the 'uppy' bit.  ;D ;D ;D

Baked beans on toast, this evening.  ;)(At least we've got enough dog and cat food to last a couple of days.)

Cheers - Phil.  :)

Yesterday it was rather icy and wet early on, so I delayed going for a bike ride till lunch time. When we had a bit of snow mid-morning, I was worried this was going to be a bad idea, but fortunately that snow came to nothing and the sun came out. So I got a nice ride in (which was good, as it had been 12 days since the last one due to illness and weather). Most of the roads and cycle paths were good by that time (as long as you avoided the large puddles in the gutter. But one area of about 100-150 yards of cycle path was still quite snowy / icy - so that was a bit slow and careful to go through. But all in all an enjoyable 20km and good to stretch / spin my legs again!

No snow overnight, but still icy so will see about going out for a slightly longer ride this afternoon.
