Having to move my gaming stuff as we are having some building work done. So I've put all my RUB together - more than I thought.

My wife initially thought this was all my gaming stuff...

With the commission figurines inserts I've managed to get 6 layers in the 9L boxes

That's about one third of my RUB boxes.

Having spent a significant amount of time effort and money on my wargames stuff I only use good quality boxes now. Have seen to many "odd" carboard boxes deposit the figures inside all over a dark carpark when they fell apart or slipped off the pile being carried.

This is a key point - if you need to transport your figures for games, you need very different storage solutions than if you game at home.

I think they multiply when left alone. While I've certainly bought a fair few, I'm not sure I bought this many. And I've recently passed quite a few over to my wife for her craft stuff, as I bought some Ikea drawer units to store figures in.

RUBs with trays.  Why wouldn't you?

They also grow bigger- well that's the excuse I made to Mrs Orcs when I inadvertently let her up into my wargames loft over the garage , and she saw the eight 64 liter boxes that hold my terrain tiles.   :D :D

Just did a rough count. I have the equivalent of 112 RUB 4l boxes spread over mostly 4l and 9l but a few 18l as well.

And I still have a ton of cardboard boxes and library file boxes.

And, I still buy figures.

So more like 4x as many!!

I find that painting figures and basing them makes them take up way more space. Unpainted figures are very high density for storage.

I'm not a fan of the RUB 3x5 trays for painted figures, but they are great for unpainted ones.

They work well with 30 x 30 bases and are ok for my WSS based on 30 x20mm. Only problem I find is with some of the standard bearers the pole is a fraction to high and the next tray bends it.

Here's a picture of my 4 liter RUB boxes.

I use the ProMag magnetic adhesive sheet which comes in a 12" x 24" roll which I cut to 8" x 12" and adhere to each box.

This is actually a new system for me as I recently built new, movable storage units and my previous boxes were too big for the shelves.
Here's a picture of those shelves:

That's a cool idea, very handy storage.  We've got a couple of Billy's in the dining room but sadly they just contain books and kitchen gadgets...  :(

Those are a fantastic storage solution

The commission-figurines trays look like the ticket for my 4 liter RUP plastic boxes. Are the 30mm depth the right choice for two layers of 10mm. That would leave a little more headroom for the top layer. I need room for whip antennas on my AFVs.

When I was in the UK I bought a load of these slimline box files https://www.amazon.co.uk/Slim-line-Coloured-Box-Files/dp/B00JIWIKFI sadly I can't get them in NZ

Cheers

The top tray in a box seems to have a little more headroom anyway.  My Early ww2 German are sitting in a 20mm tray and that includes Kubelwagens  and M/Cycle combos.

And an expensive one. So far it's cost me close to $600 including the new RUBs and magnetic sheets I had to buy.  :'(

Even the cheaper slimline box files are more than the full size ones. Which is really annoying as they are a great size.

Sometimes Viking offload goods on eby, I bought a box of 20 slimline files off ebay for about £25 a few years back. Just used the last two this week. Although at the time Mrs orcs thought I was mad ordering so many

I suppose if wargaming is your hobby then you also have to consider the cost of paints, books, storage etc. It always seems a little strange to me to spend a substantial amount on figures, spend literally hundreds of man hours painting them and then skimp on storing them. So yes, RUBs and inserts can be pretty expensive in the long run, but you don't buy them all at once, and they do stack really  weli.

Agreed. £14 to stop £200 of figures safely.
