Pick one hat, one flag design, one coat colour, one trouser colour, and bloody well stick to it.

"My French are 5th coalition."
"We could do Austerlitz."
"Wrong hat."
"Borodino?"
"Wrong flag"
:'( :'(
And France? Prussia had blue first. I don't care what you say the shade is, sort yourself out.
I have neither the time nor the crayons to explain why you are wrong.

Austrians.

Imagine trying to explain this to a non-wargaming spouse.

"I need more Austrians."
"You've got a load, can't you just say that unit is another one?
"they are German line for 5th coalition" (white coat, white trousers, helmet to 1808-09ish).

I also need some Hungarian (blue trousers, shako), and German for 6th Coalition (still all white, but wearing Shako, not helmet).

Also Grenz, who are Hungarian, but in brown, and skirmishing. And Jaeger, also skirmishing, but in grey. But different grey to the Landwehr. Who aren't skirmishing.

This is why I bought an excessive amount.

Eh? Surely this is a physical impossibility.

"Reasonably", please define this, as this does not compute

If you have more figures than can fit on your table you might consider yourself to have "More" than I can "reasonably" field.

Because if you have more figures than you can fit on your table you have a problem.

However, the problem is ....

.... you need a bigger table! :D

The oddest thing in wargaming - excluding my ability to make the average roll of a D6 about 1.4 - is the way 19th-century gamers will agonise for years about a minute anachronism in shako design (a matter of months in many cases), while ancients players will cheerfully commit Zama using alleged legionaries from half a millennium in the future who look nothing like republican types.

What Ithoriel said except Physics (time and space available ) is natures way of stopping Wargamers refighting Austerlitz at 1:20 figure scale.

I'm sure there are Napoleonic players who feel the same way about Ancient players.

Me, I use plasticard "pirates" ships to do Naval. The reason I do 10mm is I do t have to paint the detail and bugger it up.

Many tears ago a club I attended had a couple of players who looked down on "fantasy" gamers, not bothering to go and look at any fantasy gaes in the club.    One week they were playing DBM with New Kingdom Egyptians v Early Imperial Romans. I wandered across and said "Oh a Fantasy game"!  they were not happy  ;)

In our 15mm Napoleonics campaign we did allow any units from 1790 to 1815 to be fielded, thus for example you might have 1797 Venetians fighting alongside 1814 Austrians, or 1795 Puerto Rican Spanish against 1812 French. But other than that a lot of the earlier era troops couldn't form attack column, there isn't much difference.

We wouldn't however do in WW2 say a 1940 French versus 1944 Americans though. For WW2 and modern they have to be pretty much match the same quarter year.

So it does vary.
Ancients being obsessed with competition gaming in most of the rules formats, seems to have lost the plot over time scales.

As for too many figures, all those you have that can't fit on the table are simply reserves to bring on after the first wave have died.
