Just started to think about some Hungarian units for WW2 and so far done some German vehicles as Hungarian but looking for good infantry. I like the Pendraken figures but no Hungarians as yet and according to Leon not really been much interest to date. While the uniform is basically German the Hungarians don't have all the same equipment (e.g. gas mask case) and I woudl prefer not to make do.

So, any other interest out there for Hungarians?

As WWII Hungarians are a bit of a niche - you might want to have a look at what else is already available in 10mm, especially if Leon is thinking they are unlikely to go this route.

From a thread on the BKC forum, this might be useful:

"From a quick skim on the web and Zaloga's Eastern Front book:

Softskins:
Krupp Protze
Opel Blitz
Kübelwagen
Mercedes 65 Kübelwagen
Various Ford (39M Ford-Marmon, Ford G917T, Ford V8-51 ...)
A few Breda 32 tractors?
Some French trucks
A few half-tracked vehicles (SdKfz-11 ...)?

Armoured vehicles:
~100 Italian CV35 Italian Tankettes
8 Panzer IB }
102 Pz 38t } 1st Mot Bde 1942
22 Pz Kpfw IVd }
some Stug III and Marders (Aug 44), and possibly Hetzers late on.
some/few? Panzer III, IV lang and Tigers (photo evidence)
allegedlysome Sdkfz 222/3?"

Doesn't help with the grunts though...

Having said that, you might use some WW1 Germans - as was done here: http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=870.0

No worries - welcome to the forum BTW  :-h

I'll pop the Hungarians on the lists, but I think it may struggle for interest.  That being said, we do have the Toldi, so maybe some troops at some point wouldn't be a bad idea.

Lord Kermit of Birkenhead

Just looked in Mollo, their illustrations show almost standard Germans in brown. Long marching boot, Coal scuttle helmet. The jacket looks shorter, but not by much.

Hurrah

For 20mm, before ranges started appearing in lead, I used late WW1 Germans in coal scuttles and putties. They came out quite OK.

A noticable visual cue, they have a curious cut of trouser that is tight to the calves below the knee, but baggy round the thighs and leather anklets over ankle high  boots. I do not know if the anklets were attadhed to the boots (like the late war US/Post war french boots), the trousers, or seperate (like the british leather leggings issued to the home guard).

So be it putties or jack boots, just paint as if they had trousers down to the ankle browen boots, and a darker ankle strip.

The early Osprey book on east German allies shows the uniform as a mustard colour, more modern reserch and resources shows almost exclusively a green uniform, if I didn't know better i'd say exactly the same British WW1 green serge uniforms!

To avoid confusion in the field, orange armbands were worn so Germans didn't fire on them by mistake (I assume because Hans Landser catching glimps of a Hungarian would assume, has a rfle, not in feild grey, must be Russian!).

The Soloturn MG30, their standard light MG is just an MG34 with a side feed banana style magazine (the MG 34 was developed from it)
They did certainly have the Solothurn 20mm anti-tank "rifle"
the German 50mm Mortar
The Brandt/Stokes 81mm is pretty universal.
Swartzlowe MG was the standard heavy.

For barbarossa you are looking at lots of cavalry and cyclists and motorised infanty in various trucks.

I'd like to see you do Hungarian troops formally.  While the vehicles can be had elsewhere, your infantry is simply the best on the market.  And they are handy to fight the romanians in '44 (or '39) as well.  The Osprey on the subject shows a distinct "shirtsleeve" order which makes for nice looking troops.  I expect your GEA sailors will do OK for river patrols.

You might also consider doing some smaller hungarian river boats along with the soviet and romanian ones.  There were some interesting scuffles on the Danube both in 41 and 44.

Hungarians seem to have been either wearing a German WW1 helmet or a peaked cap fairly similar to the Austrian Great war design. Mixing such figures with some WW2 Germans should do the trick in any scale I would have thought.

Hi,

I am going to order some Romanian's for collection at Salute,  Was wondering when Hungarian's were due out to fight them.
